I had a '96 Dodge Stratus. P.O.S. Problems, problems and more problems. Before my car reached 36K miles, I had the head gasket replaced twice. The first time, the car had to stay on their lot for a month because the U.S. was completely out of head gaskets. The provided me with a "loaner" car from Enterprise. When I turned the "loaner" car in, the bill had come to $780 - which the dealership paid for.
Oh, some additional problems: broken shifter cable, transmission leaks due to bad seals, etc.
Needless to say, when we sold it this past summer with 107K on the odometer, we were ready to let it go. Maybe, Chrysler's quality has improved a bit. However, I'm not going to risk buying another one of their vehicles with so many other choices. However, if your friend is set on buying a Chrysler product, he/she may also consider the Intrepid. I test drove a '99 w/36K miles on it. The car had some nice options (sunroof, etc.) and the dealers "asking" price was $9,999. My guess is that something like the Intrepid would have a whole lot more life left in it for $10,000 than the 300M would for $10,000.
