98SE boots up slow... any way to speed it up?

I seem to remember my older computer upon turning it on would load windows 98SE much faster then my current rig. It seemed like my older computer would boot up about a minute faster then my current rig. As with my older rig I keep start-up items to a minimum on this rig and am at a loss for why it takes so long to boot up from the time the splash screen comes up till the desktop comes up. Any ideas?

Clean up the BIOS settings is a start
Then if I remember, turn off network in Win98

What do you mean by clean up the Bios settings? Also how do you turn off network in Win98?

I find win98se to boot up WAY faster than XP or 2k, and I have network on too.

Can you post your current BIOS settings? There s/b some "quick boot", skip post and no logo-type options that will speeds it up.

How long has it been you reformated/reinstalled. As I understand, your registry can get gunked-up with old stubs from adding deleting proggies etc.

Whats in the 98se rig? Specs-wise

Most likely 98 is looking for a DHCP server at boot-up. Right click on Network Neighborhood and go to properties. Click on the TCP/IP entry that is bound to your network card to highlight it and then Properties. It will appear similar to TCP/IP-> yada yada 10/100 LAN whatever or something along those lines.

Under the IP Address tab, check "Specify an IP Address". Type 192.168.0.1 into the IP address boxes and 255.255.255.0 into the Subnet Mask boxes. Exit and reboot.

Some of this is from memory. The numbers will work. With an IP adress assigned, the OS will not be looking for one at boot any longer.

I have had the computer since March of 2003. I have never reformatted this computer and I intend not to do it unless absolutely necessary. Right now money is tight and going out and buying CDs in order to put the GBs of my wifes pictures on them is not an option no matter how cheap they are. The only problem is that I feel it boots up to slow. I am going to try the fix that the post below mentions and see what happens. I thank you for your response, but I try not to reformat if I can get away with it.

Well if your install was just done in March '03, no biggie. Some of freinds have had there's for 4 or 5 years :)

I see no-one has mentioned the obvious - have you defragmented the HD at all? Ever?
