98SE Boot Delay Problem

Drhemlock

I get a delay of about 30 seconds after config.sys and
autoexec are loaded. I changed the msdos.sys gui boot
delay to 10. No effect. Anyone else seen this?

System:

A7V
Bios 100?
700 Tbird
20Gb ATA100 Maxtor
Win 98SE

Do you have a Network Card? They sometimes take their time at bootup. Try disabling DHCP and set your IP manual.

The Promise ATA100 controller on the A7V also takes it's time to initialize it's drivers etc. If you aren't using it disable the controller in bios and don't install the drivers for it. But I guess you will keep it for your HD.

Do you have the latest drivers installed etc? That is also a solution sometimes.

Yes, I have the same problem

I formatted the HD and reinstalled 98SE.

Installed the 4 PCI cards (which includes Promise ATA/100 and 3Com NIC and TB sound card and a firewire card) separately.

The sound card went in last and that really slowed the boot up. I get a black screen for at least 30 seconds alone and plus there is the other time devoted to sdram check and Microsoft 98 advertisement.

How can I reduce the time here?

The order of the PCI cards was via Dell's recommendation.
