Yup I would wait, I've got a Radeon 9800 PRO and while I could go for more performance

The reason Im still stuck with my 9800Pro and Socket A stuff is because theres no real reason for me to upgrade. My machine handles everything I throw at it admirably so far.

Im not planning to build a new machine until after the X2's are released at the very earliest plus I'll wait until theres a decent/affordable graphics card on the market.

Plus, I can always overclock my 9800 Pro although I'll have to get a Silencer.

With most of the people saying no its that they own 9800 pro's and feel that it performs as high as THEY need to. So if you think yours does fine don't upgraded if you want more performance upgrade.

thats how it looks like some people feel. I do relize waiting can save you some money but lets be realistic if he buys this now he gets to use it for that much longer. If he waits probably another 4 months for the new cards then he also looses alot of value on his 9800 pro as well and I doubt the price will go down that much either.

There is alot of truth there. However, comparatively high-end cards come down faster than value lost. Moreover, as an AGP solution the 9800Pro is likely to retain better value for some time..

I'd say it's only worth getting, only if you *really* need the extra performance and quality in CS:S or else will end up playing other games. If not I'd say it's not worth it. Invest the money in the meantime and wait for the next gen of cards to come up in that case.

Yea but $350 for a video card is pushing it for me as it is, and next gen cards will be $500+ range.

FIRST of all, WHY not flash your pro to XT? More FREE performance and you unlock the temp sensor and Overdriive. Your 256MB 9800p IS an XT with a BIOS flash. 😉

Radeon 9800 Pro To Radeon 9800XT Mod Guide Rev. 6.0!

Secondly, the x800xt is only a FASTER version of the 9800p/xt . . . no SM 3.0 - which WILL be in r520 (and IS in the current nViddia 6800 series)

FINALLY, when r520 is released THIS FALL - your x800xt will drop at least $100.

your choice.

[i have a 9800xt and i would NOT upgrade - now; but then i game at 10x7 )

1. Being as much as is needed.
2. Archaic. Competent; qualified.

Sufficient? A Geforce 4 TI is sufficient.

Well it's an x850xt not x800xt, does the x850 have SM3?

I have my 9800p OCed to 428/378, which is beyond the XT specs. People have told me it's not worth the risk of fvcking up my card to flash the BIOS, as the OC possibilities are better than the XT flash.

No.

Don't worry though, the world won't end because it doesn't have SM 3.0, contrary to what many people here will try to tell you.

What "people"? READ the article! 😛
[there is no risk as you can ALWAYS flash it BACK]

SM 3.0 IS important! . . . ATi is implementing it in ALL next gen cards. 😉
[of course it is "better" . . . it is more EFFICIENT than SM 2.0] 😉

Looks like someone is a poseur, Text.

there were dozenx of "identical" threads on next gen consoles . . . 'it happens' - all the time . . . looks like you should do a little "reSEARCH" yourself on flashing your card and on SM 3.0 . . .

. . . instead of complaining. 😉

Will G70/R520 come in AGP variants, and if they do how long will they take to ship after the PCIE versions come out?

yes and not sure. . . [maybe at the same time]

Anyone out their have any idea when the GF70 and R520 will be making their debut?

you mean, besides me? 😛

next month or July . . .

I really doubt they are going to be very cheap or readily available though.

ATI and nVidia are playing a different game this time . . . ati actually has the r520 "ready" but wants to introduce its SLI first . . . nVidia is "holding back" waiting to see how the r520 and ATI's AMR does . . . as soon as the first player shows his hand - they start to show and ship . . . MUCH more quickly than the last time [and the "ultra/XT" editions will depend on how fast they need to be].

BOTH ati and nVidia has LEARNED what a PR disaster the last lauch was and they better not blow it - this time.

at least this is my 'take' 😉

edit: cheap? hell, no . . . unless you think $550 is cheap.

The real problem will be the availability of the CURRENT cards - 6800u and 6800GT as more people start to sli them.😉

The SLI potential for past generation cards is worthless.

I decided not to get the x850xt, as I might have to buy a car is the near future. So all my money needs to be kept by my side.
