9800Pro --> XT flash oddity

I have recently gotten hook on modding/overclocking/breaking PC parts etc...

I have a MSI Radeon 9800 pro 128mb( green one with the big heatsink, hynix memory). I took the sink off and it had the R360 core. I was excited and wanted to flash it to XT. No reason other than to just do it. To see if I can blah blah.

More info - My system is AMD 64 2800+, Epox 8kda3j, 768ram,dvd rom,hd,antec 350W ps....

I saw a post relating to my mobo and the Radeaon 9800 pro here -
http://www.epox.com/USA/articl...p;showsupportlinks=YES

Out of the box the card installs and is seen as a PRO. When I flash it , the mobo posts code 26. I doesnt matter what bios I use. GeCube, Sapphire, Medion. I flash it back to the original and it is fine, Pro though.

Could it be that my mobo wont accept it flashed? or the card just wont flash? I used atiflash and flashrom, no errors from either.

FIRST of all, the flash to 'XT' for a 128MB Pro is pretty useless

I was under the impression that even though you have a 128MB Pro-card, a flash still gives you around 5% increase in 3DMark03 scores and unlocks certain "XT" shader optimizations. I got higher scores flashing my card so I don't see any reason to advice against flashing a 128MB card. Unless you haven't gotten a new heatsink of course.

yes i have read that guide. numerous times....

performance gain, no gain...I am not expecting anything from this flash other than just doing it. Call it a small step in learning something....or just ..I want to do it..no real reason. ...but now I am caught into why it wont work.

IF indeed when I get around to removing my stock HSF I find my 128mb 256bit 9800pro has an R360 core, I only care about the temperature probe. I know I can get my 9800Pro to artifact after 30 mins of gaming at a certain clock/mem speed and Id really like to know if its a heat issue, power issue or just that Ive hit the wall.

Quite frankly, since it develops artifacts after 30 minutes, im swaying towards a heat issue but its always nice to know.

If I get a bonus from shader optimisations.... its like going to a store to buy one loaf of bread and they actually have a Buy One Get One Free offer. Free stuff when you dont expect it is always better than no free stuff even if you dont expect it.

When you quote, quote it ALL (if not, you are a "natural" for Politics and News):
FIRST of all, the flash to 'XT' for a 128MB Pro is pretty useless (compared with flashing the 256MB Pro)
😛

If you O/C that same card to 'xt' speeds, the flash gives less than 5% in 3Dmark'03 😉
(anyone try it with '05?)

And you do run certain risks of overheating because there is no thermal diode and there is no "Overdrive" either.

i flashed mine's and my score went from 5900 to 6500. that's a good enough increase if u ask me. of course, u do need a better heatsink than the stock. and usually, a card won't overheat if u overclock from pro speeds to XT speeds. use ATItool.

I'll take that as a compliment. ;-)

Indeed you do. But to clarify, don't do it unless you have changed from the stock hsf to a better one.
