9800pro vs 6800xt

9800pro vs 6800xt which one better? i mean 9800pro for $70 and 6800xt for $130. which one is better considering the price gap? thx for the feedback

It's a decent price if that's what you mean. Radeon 9700's go for around $50 on ebay used. A 9800 Pro will be a bit better so a slightly higher price.
 
no..it won't. and it will also depend on which 6800xt you're talking about (aka, make and clock speeds). a regular 6800xt is about as fast...maybe even slower than a 6600gt...which is no where twice as fast as a 9800pro.
 
Maybe not quite twice the performance, but pretty close to it ... a 6800xt stock is very close to the same as a 6600gt, but with all pipes unlocked it becomes a 6800nu ... faster then the 6600gt in most games, but not a night & day difference... in order to see a really big jump in performance you would have to jump to a 6800GS or GT & they cost considerably more.
 
A 6800xt will be about as fast or slightly faster - definitely not worth the $130 pricetag. For around $130 you could get a faster 6600gt, x800/gt/gto, or x1600.

A regular 6800XT will be crushed by a 6600GT, and overall beaten by a 9800pro. The only 6800XT I'd go for is the Galaxy, which is overclocked to 425mhz core, 1000MHz DDR3 memory - and turns out similar, if not slightly faster than 6800 vanilla performance (depending on the game) according to the Guru3D.com review. A 9800pro would still be a nice card to get if you're on AGP, especially because they're cheaper.

Is it your position that a 3.5 year old chipset is really better here?

I have a 9800AIW and am trying to make this last as long as possible... I don't understand how there can be any truth to what you are saying....
 
6800XT with 512 onboard can be had for $150. I would think that would be good bang for the buck to take an i875 with a P4 2.8 to end of life. What do you guys think? Again, I'm going from a 9800AIW to anything nvidia.

The 6800XT is not fast enough to use 512 MB - the memory size is a gimmick. The 6800XT is slow to begin with, and the extra memory will probably just hinder overclocking. The 6800XT only has 8 pixel pipelines. Some can be unlocked to more pipes, while others are hardware disabled.

For $155 you can get something more sensible:

Hey, thanks for all that info. After some more researching I think I'm gonna buy a Sapphire x800 gto. I have a 9800 pro currently that's suffering in Oblivion and I hope to fix it 🙂.
 
If you can swing the $165 for that Sapphire X800GTO then thats the best option by far performance-wise, a 6600GT from the FS/FT forum can be had for about $90 so that & the $110 6800XT are pretty much a wash IMO ... really I think your best off going with a 9800 Pro/XT from FS/FT because they can be had for about $70 & in reality are faster then you'ed think they have any right to be... the 9800 Pro is the slowest card you should consider though IMO... the 9700 Pro is just enough slower to not be worth the small $ savings.
