9800pro 256MB vs. 6800nu 128MB?

They're about the same prices as of now; which one will perform better?

I'm just curious as I'm going to upgrade to a new video card in the near future and I'd like to know which one will last me for a while. I'm going to be playing the newest and greatest games and I'd like them to look fairly decent on my machine.

I've been reading around and the 6800 beats the 9800pro 256mb in some places, and loses in others. Does the extra 128mb of RAM matter? Or should I just get the 6800 because it's the next generation card and will just purely out-perform the 9800?

My current system:
Athlon XP 2500+ @ 2.2 GHz
512 MB PC3200 DDRAM
Soyo SY-KT600 DRAGON PLUS v.1.0
ATI Radeon 9600SE

Thanks for your help!

The 6800 is a faster card most of the time; it also is a newer card with more useful optimizations for gaming and is more "future proof". IQ is about the same (excellent).

The only advantage the 9800XT HAD was it's cheaper price (i got mine for $223) - since they are now "close" in price, the 6800 choice is a 'no-brainer'.

HOWEVER, if you are looking at MORE performance that will "blow-away" the 9800XT and CAN wait a bit longer for prices to drop - consider the 6800-256MB card or the 6800GT . . . 😉

I'll be the bad cop today. <Dr.Evil> do a freakin' search next time, would ya?</> Seriously, this has been beaten to death, heck it's already been processed into steaks for Sizzler, you can even still see the marks where we have beaten it 😛

Hahahahaha! BTW, if you don't have that 5800U in a nice handgun style display case, hanging on the wall I'll see to it the Packers gets worked over this year! 😉

Care to provide a link (or 2)?

What's "search"?

back to "work"

I just replaced my 9800Pro with a 6800.. I'm totally impressed with the 6800 over it, and its the best decision I made, considering it cost me nothing..

Lovin the 6800 so far.. The reason I was prompted to replace it was ATI's consistantly bad drivers. Their new drivers to fix doom3, caused 25% of my older games to break.. I about had enough of that.

The problem with the 6800NU is that it has only 128MB of ram and NV?s drivers tend to be very memory hungry. The 6800nu does fine at 1024x768-4AA/16AF, but if you look at the xbit benches at 1280x960- 4AA/16AF ? the 6800nu takes a big performance hit on a lot of games ?..
