This is one of those unfortunate tech horror stories. Hopefully you've learned something from it and others can benefit from your experience. There's no excuse for this taking 9 months to resolve. But at least you now have a working card and the 9800GTX is no slouch, so don't be too down.

It's the shotgun approach for those who can't identify root causes. I would guess that most of us have done this at least once when other troubleshooting has failed.

i would not say it's idiotic if you've tried everything else you can possibly think of and still get nowhere. what better place to start than from a fresh install with no apps or programs running to possibly conflict with your video card drivers? it's only an hour or so install time, load of drivers and and see where it goes from there
