9800GX2 is about to reach End of Life

I am glad I didn't buy this card, everywhere I look there is a talk of that mystery GT200. Anyway they are saying 9800 GX2 will be obsolete within 3 months. Can't believe the lifespan of a product is so little in the PC industry, this is why consoles always win. There is no proper standard which users can trust, I hate all this forced innovation and research just to keep the money rolling.

If NV carry on like this I am sure to dump them forever.

Well I think we all knew this before it even launched.....the RV770/GT200 have been rumored to be coming in around June so buying a GX2 now is simply stupid if you are going for longevity.

Gee whiz guys..... it's not like the card is going to shut off in 3 months and never work again. it just isn't going to be the highest end card anymore

No kidding.
I just bought a PCI 64MB video card for a server (which will be running bots in Asheron's Call, an old MMO which has had many upgrades to graphics), I run my PVR with an integrated geforce 6100/shared mem, and I just recently upgraded my main system from a 6600 (with DDR, not DDR2) to a 7900GS/OCE which still plays all the newest games quite well with high settings, and how old is that card?

Hey lavaheadache, I love the V5 5500 in your sig ;) nice to see someone still using theirs. I would be running my v4 4500 in a "Classic gaming box" if someone hadn't stolen it years ago :(

gt200 (9900gtx) is only a little more powerfull 10/15%? then the 9800gx2. I don't see a problem here. It's not gonna make the gx2 obsolete or anything.

but if the GT200 is a single card with less power consumption, that could make it a lot more attractive. i haven't read any rumors on it or anything, so i don't know what it is. so please excuse my ignorance.

lol.... new model in June.. are you sure is june of this year or 2009... I hear some rumors about ATI cards too... new X4xxx family in June in Wikipedia.. but when i see some other more official data.. they say that Radeon x4xxx is going to hit in 2009 lol...

The point is ... dont trust that much coments around... the best is the official word from manufacturer.. if isnt more than obvious.

Anyone who remembers the 7950gx2 should have know this was coming. I'm actually surprised it's taking this long to get a new high end gpu, and it better be at least as fast as a 9800gx2.

Yes its a single card with high power requirements and supposedly a very large chip that runs hot until the die shrinkage to 55mn at the end of the year.

I had a 7950GX2 and was happy with it, until I replaced it with an 8800GTX at that cards launch. I am about to replace that with a 9800GX2, and I am sure I will be just as happy with it until I decide to replace it (whether it be in 3 months or not) with a faster card. Buying video cards as long term investments is kind of stupid for myself personally, I love playing with the new card all the time.

built-in die shrink ftw! you probably have to have a monthly charge for built-in hardware changes though

i posted this thread a full week before GX2 even launched

GT200 is apparently already taped out and Waiting for r700!
Summary: Buy GX2 for $600+ or 3870x2 for $450 or Wait for GT200?

[Thread's conclusion: "wait"]

**[edited to remove some of my stupidity; sorry]**

i think this is the LAST time we will see NVIDIA do this ;)

the same rumors say *twice* .. r700 is rumored to be only a "little more powerful" in comparison. GT200 is gonna be a monster like G80 and should be "long term" contrasted with 9800's "short term"
:Q

best case, of course

it probably isn't very cool to say i told you so or that my analysis was dead on .. letsee .. how many weeks ago was it? about five weeks?
-Edit i looked just 4 - from April 11 - a full week before GX2 even launched! .. and it might have been considered a warning. :p

Not twice as fast as a gx2. twice as fast as a 9800gtx is the rumor Ive read.

The only thing that may be twice as fast is the fan and after strobing the fan on the 3870X2 that is a stretch as it would sound like a gas turbine if it did!

Hopefully a card with the performance of a 9800gx2 is around $300...if not around $300 I will just buy the 9800x2 as I am sure the price will drop some

Yep and they are working on a new title called CRYPIG, where you run around with assloads of hot hardware and try to smack the super detailed real-time ray-traced pig until it starts crying. The trick of course is getting hardware hot enough and fast enough to run at high enough FPS to catch the pig. :( Nothing like that available yet...maybe with this next-gen.

I really dont buy it. For starters there isnt an immediate need for a more powerful card. Nvidia typically likes to launch in the 3rd quarter with 4th quarter availability for the holiday season. I will be very surprised if the GT200 keeps the G92's model numbers.

the 7800gtx??!?

that explains it

:)

Please speak for yourself! .. IF they had OCTO-XfireX or Dual-Quad SLi i'd be drooling even though i know i never will play with it and the Bridged 1200w PSes required to run Crysis at 25x16 on Very High would require 220w and more money than i can afford on my power bill [for air conditioning] :p

You obviously haven't read all the comments condemning NV's last 2 releases ;)

For me this is good news as I will certainly wait now for the next single-gpu high-end offering from NV or ATI. Most games run well but I'm far from 60FPS capped at 1920 in most of the games I run nowadays, and that's where I'd like to be with AA on where I can.
