kinda like the 2XXX series radeon cards. those had 512-bit, but that didn't seem to really help matters.

Not like the 2900 in respect to the 512bit bus. The GX2 is simply two 256bit bus's slapped together, and they call it 512bit for marketing purposes. The same with the 1GB memory- that is really 512mb x2...so each GPU only has a 512mb frame buffer to address, opposed to a 'full' 1GB.

with current drivers, how would you say it fairs against a 3870x2? seeing as how there's no concrete review on the gx2 yet. need to know if i should even bother cracking mine open or just stay with the x2 for now.
do you know if the gx2 cards work on p35 chipset boards in sli, or are we waiting for a driver update for that?

First you say you can't reveal your experience with the pooptoast (or if it runs cooler, thanks to lower clocks, shall we call it the poop-sandwich) and then you make crappy posts like this one, so more guys here will beg you to post some benches (which, even if you did, I wouldn't take seriously).

NDA hasn't lifted quite yet, but I'll say people will notice the difference between a GX2 and a X2, which is as it should be.
To the best of my knowledge, SLI is still locked to Nvidia chipsets only. Only Crossfire can be run on Intel and ATI/AMD chipsets. Dang shame.

It looks as if nRollo is giving you strait up marketing speak and you are eating it right up.
He managed to avoid any tecnical answer and only told you "people will notice the difference" and that could mean almost anything (including people wont be impressed).
