I just got my 9800gtx today (stock clocks)an all I can say is WOW! I was going to get a gts because everyone recommends here in the forums but went for the gtx since i am going to step up to a gt200.
I dont know how high the gts overclocks but This card overclocks like if it was made from intel. I went all the way to 830 core and 2500 on the memory without artifacting or anything playing COD4. Im sure that the card can go higher if I unlink the shader clock and go clock for clock (after 830 i tried 850 and the driver started restarting).All this and i never went above 60c
BTW. I was using EVGa's software which i find better than atitool or others.
