9800GTX+ to CrossFire 4850 worth it?

Considering this trade. Have a 512MB 9800GTX+ and was offered 2x Asus TOP 512MB 4850 in CrossFire for my card plus $100.

Big performance increase? Worth the money? My monitor resolution is 1680x1050
 
What cpu do you have? Judging by this review http://www.guru3d.com/article/...ossfirex-performance/3 two 4850 in crossfire and an E8400 at stock, eat up as much as 421 Watts under load, so you are a bit on the edge with that PSU.

That Asus TOP 4850 is one of the best 4850 on the market. I'd grab that pair for 100$ and somehow squeeze my pockets for a couple of dollars more for a better PSU. It's just such a sweet deal to let it pass.

I have a Q9400 but am not terribly keen on having to sell my current PSU and then shopping around fora new one.
 
If you have a quad, I believe you are really asking too much from that PSU. Running it near maximum load will greatly increase the risk for a failure. I for one, wouldn't take that chance. It's too bad, because this is a very nice and cheap upgrade.

If you point me to some suitable PSU's I will consider it. Hopefully will be able to sell the Antec NeoPower for $50ish.

im a bit confused, heheh. one deal sounds highly unlikely, but i didnt quite understand. lol.
either way id still run the crossfire 4850 boards on a neo 500. and its performance is going to be way faster than a 9800gtx+, more like a gtx285.

I've read a few reviews if the Antec NeoPower series claiming they can provide even more power stably than they're rated. Can this be so?

They are very good PSUs indeed, but I don't know. When I ran a PSU close to its limits I had problems and I wouldn't risk it again. But my PSU wasn't an Antec Neo though. The general idea is that it should hold, but you're reaching just short of 500 Watts with your system and the PSU will work at higher temps, with capacitors at their limits and will surely have a shorter lifespan. It's up to you. If you feel safe with it like this, go for it.
