9800GTX for 40$ a good deal?

So i was offered a 9800GTX for 40$, should i take it? I would like a second card to fill the empty space in my case 😛. but also if i ever sell my computer i would keep my 470 and sell the 9800 with it. So is it worth the price?
 
$40 for the 9800 GTX is a good deal.

$40 to fill an empty slot in your motherboard makes little sense.

$40 would fit nicely into a slot in my wallet if you needed to put it somewhere.

I also want an extra card for physX (gimmicky i know), MAYBE folding, and as i said earlier to sell it. Plus having a good backup wont kill me.
 
Agree with Happy, $40 a bit high for 9800 GTX, unless it is Ebay 😛

$35 is probably fair, and $30 is a NICE deal, local; if it has to be shipped then add shipping to that price. Consider there are a lot of GTS 250 cards out there for not much more. I picked up a GTS 250 for $33 shipped a while back in our for sale forums here, that was a good deal in my book. I also picked up a pair of GTX 260 Core 216 896MB for $60 and $55 shipped. I see them sell for a bit higher on eBay. You might bide your time if you just want a steal. I wouldn't pay $40 for a 9800, myself.
 
Corporate Thug has a good point too. Sometimes when I'm wheeling and dealing with $30-40 cards, I ask myself what is the end goal. At some point, there is a price under which I'll just put them in my cabinet to have around. But if someone is trying to sell it, no point in paying $5 above fair value when there are so many on the market (8800, 9800 and GTS 250) that are all about the same card.
 
I thought it was determined that anything less than a 260 GTX these days was not powerful enough for PhysX? I was sure people were saying all those old washed up 8800GTs were worthless as a PhysX card. Heck, I think the last time someone recommended a PhysX card on this forum said 460 GTX+

I'm almost as bad as you. I won't admit how many I have. 🙂

But now that DX11 cards are mainstream, no point in paying too much for an older card. It is worth what it is worth. If I want to do someone a favor, I'll give them a Christmas present. I don't take pity unless it is someone hardup for cash.

I dunno man, it depends on what your primary card is, probably. With a high end card as your primary, I'm not sure it makes sense at all to use a separate card. The higher end cards can handle the physx as well or better, am I wrong? I'm just basing this on my reading, I don't actually use a separate physx card.
 
Ive read all the posts, and we are split down the middle, some people think that this card is a waste of money, and some think that it is worth it. We can all agree that its approximatley a GTS250, and newegg has those for a lot more, so i think im going to grab it, and ill keep it in my second PCIe slot, and use it as a backup should ever the need arise. Thanks everyone.
 
yes it's basically a GTS 250 performance wise. It actually would make a suitable TV gaming card shall you ever want to build another rig. 😉

I'm actually itching for the Next Gen cards to come out. I've had my 580 for a year and could use a little more umph in a few more titles.

Having a backup card is a very smart move. Especially these days when a lot of companies are not willing to cross ship. Luckily, before I had a spare video card, I had a buddy of mine willing to lend a card during my 3 week RMA with eVGA.

I'm currently using a 9800 GTX+ with a Radeon HD 5870 and I can max out Batman: AC in DX9 mode with PhysX on High. I can even get 30-40FPS in DX11 with PhysX on High.

Batman: AC has used the most PhysX effects I've seen to date.
 
gts250 = a 1gb 9800gtx+, a regular 9800gtx is slower

Speeds are as follows.

8800gtx,9800gtx 512mb, 1gb 9800gtx+, gts250 1gb, 4850, 4870 512mb(55$), gtx260 (192 core)
