9800GT replacement (with E8400)

My 9800GT has given up the ghost (fan died, sniff) and I need a replacement fairly urgently (i.e. within the next 1-2 days, since I need to remote when working from home).

Mobo: XFX 750i SLI
Processor/CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 2x2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2
Current Graphics Card: XFX GeForce 9800GT
Display Resolution: 1920x1080
PSU: Corsair TX650W
Case: Antec Performance Plus 1080AMG, 3 fans

I'm not a heavy gamer (read: no plans to multi-GPU), but have successfully played COD-MW3 (single player only) on my current rig, enjoy playing Civ 5 (which chugs a bit), and I'm currently fooling around with Just Cause 2 and Borderlands.

Budget: ~$100 CAD

I'm not averse to spending a bit more for some improvement in performance and longevity, but understand that my CPU will be the bottleneck with newer games anyways.

I CANNOT afford to upgrade mobo & CPU at this time. I will eventually build a new rig, maybe next year, but too many cost pressures this year.

I wouldn't mind something a bit cooler, less power to help with summer temps in my south-facing home office and electricity bills, but figure that most new cards should be a bit better on these fronts anyways.

I really just need something to get me back up and running and make me feel that my purchase and money isn't totally throwaway.

Also: might consider overclocking my E8400, but haven't really looked into it.

Any and all recommendations/suggestions are much appreciated.

Many, many thanks in advance.

a HD 7750 it is then?

Maybe a on sale GTX 560 / 6850 if you can find one around 100 :).

Seems to be the most obvious choices, provided you OC your dualcore.

Thanks for the speedy response! Must admit, I almost pulled the trigger on a 6770 last night, but decided I ought to get some better informed opinions.

I see that the 7750 seems to outperform the 6770, but got confused by the overlap in pricing.

The 7750 is faster than the 5770/6770 in newer games (dx11) but slightly slower in older and not-so-old games but not by much. A used 5770/6770 if you can get it cheap is a good value for your setup.

Thanks! I'm not seeing many 6850 sales/rebates that I can get in short order, but I'll keep searching.

As for my rig, I try to build for some level of longevity, 2nd or 3rd from top of the line. I guess my strategy's worked, since it's still working even if it does chug at times. :D

Thanks again! I'm going to hit a few bricks-and-mortar stores today to see if there's any deals to be had; otherwise, I'll probably go for that PowerColor HD 7750 from NCIX. 7770 performance gains look tempting, but <$100 next-day looks better than >$125 later this week.

Its your choice, but to me the only reason to buy a 7750 is that it will run without a supplementary power connector. It will be only slightly faster than your 9800 GT, I would think. With your power supply, I would go for the 7770 for sure. The extra performance and longevity would be worth the extra 25.00 IMO.

well he is getting the new card because his 9800gt has crapped out and a 7750 will be about 50% faster than his 9800gt. that is not bad too bad but yeah the extra 25 bucks for the 7770 might be worth it for many games.

He has a 650 Corsair PSU so power is not a problem. Try and get a 7770/6850/560SE whichever is cheaper.
