9800 series release dates

Well I am sure it is posted somewhere in this forum but since search seems to hate me right now, I figured I would just make a post about it.

Pretty much just curious what the general release schedule looks like for the 9800 series. Reason I ask is that I and trying to figure how I want to upgrade my current card. I was thinking of getting an 8800gt now and grabbing another soon after and running SLI, or if the 9800 series were going to see a release anytime soon possibly doing the same thing with one of those.

It's all rumor. There have been no official announcements.

If you really want a card now, get an EVGA 8800. Then you will have 90 days for the 9800gx2 to come out. So as long as the 9800gx2 is out before the first of june you can trade up your 8800 in EVGA's step up program if you really decide you want one, or grab another 8800 if not.

honestly I don't really need a new card now. Pretty much I am trying to plan out what card/cards I will use to play Age of Conan when it comes out. Its not scheduled for release until May 20th, that is if it doesn't get pushed back again, so I dont need a new card/cards until then. I'll probably just hold out until the beginning of May and see how the GX2s handle and if the GTX/GTSs are out check them out too.

the best guess for GX2 is "week of March 18"

ides of march?
:Q

$600 😛

e tu, Brute?
>>> aaagh :brokenheart:

😕

By May20th the card selection will be the same... except you will have single card SLI 8800GTS and then the 8800GT and 8800GTS will be called 9800GTS and 9800GTX.

Seriously, nvidia's true next gen isn't coming out until Q4 so if you can get a good deal on a G92 card right now then it would be wise because the new 9 series card are probably going to cost a little more for minimal benefits (tri-sli and better power layout)

From what i can tell, the 9 series offer smaller performance increases, BUT they are going to sell cheaper than when the 8800GTX/Ultra was first introduced (especially the ultra having a ridiculous price tag).

Im thinking $399~449 for 9800GTX. Would be truly disappointing if the cards are more expensive.

With the 9800GTX launching @ ~$400-450....hypothetically....

Which would be the best bang for the buck?

1) 9800GTX ($400-$450)
2) 8800GT SLI ($440)
3) 9600GT SLI ($360)

It is a very debatable topic but also a very viable one seeing as though the "true" next-gen might not be out until Q4 2008 anyway.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions....

I would say the 9600GT SLI would be the best. The cheapest and just about the same as the 8800GT's.

I seen somewhere, Can't find it now, that the MSRP for the 9800GTX was $599

That would be crazy!!

For $600, I think everyone would just do 8800GTS (G92) SLI....I know I would.

Wasn't it the GX2 having a MSRP of $599?

Im not too sure about the prices on the GTX/GT, and maybe even the rumoured on the 9 series GTS part. Any links?
All these cards are going to be out by late march along with 790i/780a etc. Thats a couple of weeks.

I believe the NDA for these video cards is up on March 11th, one day after CeBIT ends, so I'm guessing all your big hardware review sites like Anandtech, Tomshardware, will have reviews of these new cards in a few days.

nobody knows what the best bang will be. nobody can even make an educated guess yet. there has not been any benchmarks or prices released yet. So there is no use even trying to guess.

I'll make a guess. msi 8800gt OC for 190AR is the best bang for buck deal we will see this year and probably for 2009 as well.

I thought the GTSG92 for 229 and the 8800GTX for 299 were pretty good deals too so I bought one of each ^^

those are both good deals, but an extra $109 for the gtx especially will only show a reasonable benefit at very high res with AA. How many people have a 24-30" monitor already but DON'T have a kickass video card setup? Also, the gtx in particular is finally getting outdated. Aren't the 174.xx drivers supposed to fix an AA/AF memory bug, thereby giving a huge relative advantage to lower bandwidth, lower memory g92 cards? You can definitely make a case for gts g92 for 229 at higher res going forward, but those 16 extra sp's won't be worth the $40 in the vast majority of cases imho.

was he being funny?
--why would you buy 2 cards that cannot be SLI'd with each other 😛
😕

it'll work for AMD, not NVIDIA [yet]

The 9800GX2s will not be a paper launch AFAIK, and the rumored launch date is March 18th.

i bet you it is

why the hell else would it be so damn expensive?

unless it is a monster performance wise we have another 7800GTX-512MB .. same guy ... same recommendation
--from my experience, a predatory leopard cannot change his spots 😉

i.e - buy it on day 1 - with an eye to making money on it the very next week to the suckers that must have the fastest single card?
- that is a good idea!

let those that are wise, pay very careful attention to the details

How much? 😉

Perhaps it offers higher performance than any other single slot solution, so it's priced higher than any other single slot solution.

In any case, no point in speculating, time will tell soon enough. Heh- things always get crazy around launch day. 🙂

as i noted, it *better* blow the doors off you own SLi - nevermind the poor 3870x2 which NVIDIA just appears to be "answering" 😛

it sure doesn't look "elegant" ... but i guess it depends on your Marketing department and PR to play it up, right?

"the fastest single slot solution - *only* $650!"
- by NVIDIA the expensive performance leader

too many "Qualifications" for my taste 😛
-especially when for $450 "2nd best" doesn't look so bad, any more

at least for the "value minded" .. and there appear to be more of us in a recession that may actually think about dropping nearly $700 on something that is SO interim

go for it ... if you *need* to upgrade, it just might be for you

nvidia doesn't NEED to release a ton of 9800gx2's, they just need enough to say that it's AVAILABLE and FASTER than the 3870x2. Will it be "available"? yes. will it be faster than 3870x2? yes. score one for the green team. now, the $599 price tag is undoubtedly due just as much to its limited availability as to it's superior perfromance.

IMHO, the one nice thing about 9800gx2, the thing that will get real computer geeks going after it, is that it will finally allow "crossfire" performance on an intel mobo. Think about, no need to settle for nvidia mobos, which have a nasty reputation for bugginess (at least with c2d's). Most tech-savvy computer do-it-yourselfers these days build c2d/q rigs on intel-based mobos. A few hard core gamers have chosen to go 650/80/780 etc for sli ability. How nice would it be to just drop $599, knowing that you've got a much better platform and similar graphics performance?

Now, AT recently did a nice article on a 650i mobo that was very nice, and nvidia chipsets are getting much better, but that doesn't impact the army of current intel chipset owners right now nor does it address the quad core penryn issue. There is definitely going to be a market for this card, probably more of a market than nvidia can/will supply. This card will probably be good for amd as the 3870x2 will go from "overpriced" to "good value", so I think that both sides will come out of this looking good. Let's just hope that 9800gx2 is more like 8800gtx than 7950gx2 in terms of nvidia support...
