Hi I've recently bought an ATI radeon 9800 pro 128mb, since I've been using it I've reformatted once. I updated my mobo chipset drivers and my video card drivers, yet i still have this problem. Every 3 seconds or so, my graphics seem too jerk, for 1-2 seconds, it is really frustrating, however I'm pretty sure it isn't my video card, because it used to do this with my old geforce 4 mx440 se

So my question is, have any of you experienced this?, and if so how can i fix it?

The only game I play is America's Army

My system specs are:
AMD athlon xp 2500+
Biostar m7ncd mobo(nforce 2 chipset)
20gig maxtor ata 133 HDD
80 gig samsung ata 100 HDD(storage)
LG CD-rom
LG CD-rw
ATI radeon 9800 pro 128mb
768 DDR 3200@333mhz
450 watt generic psu

Ps. i have xp home edition sp.1 and all of the most recent critical updates, and the catalyst 4.7's, not sure about mobo chipset drivers, but there the most recent on the nvidia website

Thanking you in advance, Graeme

When you are running your game, do you have a lot of background processes running? Like a distributed computing client or video encoding sessions? Perhaps a virus scanner is slowing you down occassionally? Your system is close enough to mine such that I can say that you shouldn't have any glitches in AA when playing with even high levels of details/AA/AF based on your hardware and OS.

Yeah, it sounds as though you've got something running in the background that's stealing CPU cycles. You say the graphics jerk for 1-2 seconds, and this happens every 3 or so seconds....so it's essentially continuous then or not?

no I close everything when i play, the only icons in my system tray are ICQ(always on), and my internet connection, my ping is always between 90-100 so i know it's not lag, i don't use AA/AF, i don't care so much about looks, I like to be able to pwn at 90 fps

I'll post you all of the processes my comp runs

spoolsv.exe(system)>>?
svchost.exe(local service)<<?
vplus.exe(user)<<ICQ plus
itouch.exe(user)<<for my keyboard
svchost.exe(system)>>?
ati2evxx.exe(system)>>?
icq.exe(user)>>ICQ
lsass.exe(system)>>?
services.exe(system)>>?
winlogon.exe(system)>>?
csrss.exe(system)>>?
explorer.exe(user)>>?
ventrilo.exe(user)>>voice comm program my clan uses
ati2evxx.exe(user)>>?
smss.exe(system)>>?
system(system)>>?
system idle process(system)>>?

also my agp aperture is set to 256, would this be the rpoblem?, is it possible i have a virus?>>i don't use any anti virus software?, but other than this everything seems to run normal

Nah it's not really continuous, it just does it enough to bug me, sometimes i die because of it tho....

Well, you can turn off ati2evxx.exe by going into services and disabling ATI Hotkey Poller. It's not necessary and most tweak guides recommend this. The rest looks good.

As to the AGP Aperture size, I use 128MB. Perhaps you could try that and see what happens. Do you have Fast Writes enabled? Most say turning this off fixes many glitches and hitches with ATI hardware (though it works fine for me) so you may want to turn it off. Same with AGP8X.

Try playing without icq. I used to have tiny lags every once in a while, and I found out it was mbm5 that was updating temps every 10s or so. Turning that off made everything butter smooth.

I think he's just saying that AGP8X could be causing more problems than it's worth. Benchmarks have shown that the AGP 8x setting is nothing more than a marketing gimmic, and provides maybe a 1-2% increase (at best) over AGP 4x.

Yes to MysticX23 and BlueWeasel. I can't explain why but some people just can't use FW and AGP8X without problems. Those that can't use those settings for whatever reason find that stability and smoothness is improved by turning FW off and setting AGP speed back to AGP4X.

He's using the Catalyst 3.7 drivers (see OP).

Burtie, Americas Army has very bad offical servers supplied by SCI. That isn't your computer. Thats your lag. Check your ping. And your packet loss the server (type: ~stat net).

It isn't your computer. it is your connection or their servers.

k i changed fw and agp 8x, i helped a little, but not all that much, the jerks just weren't as bad, then i tried turning my agp aperture to 128, that seemed to work for me, however also when i was testing it after changing my agp aperture i went into the process's menu and shut down the ati process mentioned above, however i forget how to get into the services menu thing to disable it permenantly, can some please help me with that now?

Thanks for the help

Ps. when i tried it the second time after changing my agp aperture i was asked to leave the server shortly after killing 5 guys in a row........i love playing at 90 fps, you guys rule!

Cawchy, my ping reads 80, at the most 90, i havn't checked my packet loss yet, ive got to go out for the night, but once i do check it is there anyway to stop from losing packets?, or is it just sci licking?<<I also remember that you told me you were in UoE weren't u? well if you still are a company called netfire i think is supposed to be starting to rent official servers, i think we are gonna look into them

Megatomic, I checked your computer stats page thing and i saw that you have the vga silencer, i've thought about getting this, but im scared of damaging my gpu, was it hard for you to install?, does it work well?, i don't like the idea of hot air bundleing up under the card i just paid 300$ for ya know?

no way to stop packet loss, but that sounds like what the problem is. I also have a VGA scilencer and it took me ~5 minutes to put it on. The first time i did it it took me a little longer because i wanted to make sure it was purfect.

It's not worth it, you will void your warranty. Don't mess with it unless you have the knowledge and experience necessary, and can afford to lose 300$ because you slipped and broke something during the process.

It isn't hard to do, and it really is low risk, but there is no point to putting on one if you are not overclocking. It is quieter, but not that much.

ya i guess that's true, i mean it would kinda suck to pay 20 just to pay 300 more a week l8er, and i don't overclock, im too scared, so ya i guess ill stick with stock, thanks for giving me that POV

To stop ati2evxx.exe from loading permanently, do this:

Open Control Panel
Open Administrative Tools
Open Services
Scroll down to ATI Hotkey Poller and right click on it
Select Properties
Click on Stop then change startup type to Disabled
Click Apply and reboot

You shouldn't see ati2evxx.exe in the list of running processes any more. :)

Regarding the VGA Silencer, it was a breeze for me to install it. But if you don't overclock and if the noise of the stock cooler doesn't bother you then you are better off leaving the stock cooler installed. Installing it does void your warranty.
