9800 Pro vs 9700 Performance

I can get a very good price on a used 9700. For a game like DOOM3 how does it compare to the 9800 Pro?

i beat d3 on a 9700pro. ran well at 1024 medium settings. my buddy runs it on a 9800pro. the game ran as smoothly as mine with high settings.

I think original 9800 Pros probably aren't that much better then 9700's but if you buy a 9800 Pro now, you're likely to get an r360 core which has a bunch of optimizations over both the 9700 and 9800 pro and they also are likely to clock higher. If you can get a 9700 Pro for 100$ or something, go with it, but if it's 150$ or more, I'd say go for the MSI RX9800 (basically a 128mb 9800xt) for 195ish.

I remember that the 9800 pro had a ~10-30% gain over the 9700 pro when running at the same clock when using AA. Without AA, their performance was really close. Anand did an article on this in the past.

I would go for the 9700pro, if you can get it ~120 shipped it is a great deal. I run farcry on high and doom 3 on medium no problem. I tried it on high, but i didn't notice any differance in the graphics so i turned it back down to get higher fps.

how good?

is this for your son?

and generally, the 9700p is ~10%-20% slower than the 9800p . . . the difference in Doom iii would be a "notch" less detail.

You are right apoppin. It is for my son.

In my post last week, most people recommended a 9800 Pro.This is a long story but by pure luck I came across this 9700 this weekend. The 9700 would only cost me $125 and would be a drastic improvement over his present GF3. In a few months, we could sell it on eBay and get a 6800 when they start coming down in price.

it will be make a BIG difference in Doom for now . . . and you won't lose much when the 6800s drop in price and you resell it . . . kinda like "renting" it . . .

. . . in fact this week, i just got $40 for my 2 year old (almost 3-1/2 years since launch) radeon 8500-128MB (i paid $129 for it brand new) . . . that makes my 9800xt effective cost less than $200

. . . it'll probably still be worth ~$100 when the r500 launchs next year (i hope)

edit: just make sure you trust your seller . . . the 9700p you buy should be free of any problems or artifacting.

just to correct you on the math, 9800 pro is only 10-15% faster than 9700 pro. This is true in general, and in particular in doom 3. And the only reason it's faster is because the core and memory clocks are higher, by 17% and 10% respecitively. That fact has been established and known ever since the 9800 pro was released. So despite what ati says, apart for some minor changes, it's 99% the exact same core used in 9700 pro and 9800 pro. So the difference is as I said between 10-15% (and never more than that), and that doesn't change with or without AA/AF.

I still like the 9700 pro, it can run almost any game on med-high @1024x768, including the new engines of doom-3 and far cry, which will be the basis for many games in the next two years. So if you're happy with this kind of gaming performance (which is quite good, but not state of the art), the 9700 pro is a your card. Also 9700 pro has a claim on last generation's cards big leap in performance as it was the first to be released, thus earning a legendary reputation as a breakthru product (just read the rave reviews from the end of 2002). long live 9700 pro!

The 9700p is a great card. If you are looking to upgrade in a few months to a 6800 variant, i would suggest getting the 9700p due to HL2 and D3 being the most demanding games within that short period and the 9700p being able to play them respectably nice.

well r360 (later 9800s) does have optimizations over the r350 (9700 and early 9800s) . . . and your "Math" - '+15%' is probably "closer" than my '~20%' (which was very approximate on purpose) . . . but the point (mine/yours) is that the 9700p is a great deal still . . .

you DO realize that games based on the Doom III engine are going to be MORE demanding than the game itself?! I wouldn't expect much more than a "year" out of the 9700p.
