I know it isn't much of a contest proformance wise. However my friend who does a
lot of video editing and not too much gaming is getting a new computer and is
not sure if he should spend the extra $240 dollars to upgrade to the 9800 pro.
His specs:
3.0 ghz p4 +HT with 800 mhz fsb
512 400mhz dual channel ram
17 inch ctr monitor

I know that he will be mainly using adobe premier however will use other
programs.

Seeing as how i only know the difference from a gaming stand point, and not from
a video editing stand point I had no idea if the upgrade would be worth the
money or help him in any way. So would the 9800 pro help his video editing?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Absolutely not. If all he does is video editing, the FX5200 will be fine.

But if he ever wants to get his game on, he'll regret not having the ATI.

Depends how much he games and if he's happy with the 5200 for that. For video editing the 5200 is just as good as the 9800.

If I were him I would go for the 9800 Pro just in case there is something graphics intense that he might come across. Tell him to get the 9800 Pro and buy him a game or something. lol

Is more RAM really worth it? I have 512mb and when I see people with similar rigs and 1GB of RAM they score about the same 3dmarks or like 10 or more marks than I do. To me that isnt worth it and to most it shouldnt be either, I guess its just a "thing to have".

1GB of ram won't increase your 3Dmark scores, but that's not what he's using the machine for.
It will help in video editing.

So what exactly does it improve? I wouldnt mind having 1GB but if I dont need it then to me it isnt worth the extra dough unless I had a lot of it.

The Nvdia card will be a little quicker in video editing :Q reason being nvdia 2D is slightly quicker, shocking I know but true.

My friend is an Animation and graphic designer. He says he needs alot of ram to handle the intense graphic and video processing. His animations lag when he is viewing and drawing at the same time. Initially he had a gf440mx and 512 mb ram. He upgraded to a 256 gffx5600 and 1gb ram and now they run smoothly.

Well wouldnt that be the video card making it run smoothly? I am in no way arguing that 1GB isnt better than 512MB I just want to know how and why.

.

If he's in the states he can get a 9800 pro for $167 after rebates. But if he doesnt game the 5200 will suffice.

I guess its the video card. Anyway my friend upgraded both sides to be on the same side. Besides its those cheap kingston ram. Both the ram and card are cheap.:)

maybe he should wait for the new nvidia card with supposed built in video decoding/encoding. Not too far away, about a month or 2.

Anyway, I would probably give him a tad faster than that. Maybe he should go with an ATI card too, because they have all those video enhancements and stuff. A 9600 should be good.

He will need 1GB and probably better to have 1.5GB to 2GB. He will need it when he handles big video files.

I decided to go into the 1GB area because loading up Day of Defeat would leave me with about 100MB more. Now with 1GB I have used more than 512MB and on PCmark2002, my memory score when up by 1000-1500 points

Video editing is very RAM hungry, it's all I know XD

Well, seems like he has gotten even cheaper, he found he could save more money if he got an ATI radeon AIW 9000 64mb. He claims that he can hook it up to his tv so its better. I couldn't convince him that you could do the same thing with the 9800 pro.

Here's the question - Will he still be alright with the 64 mb card? Or is the card so old that it will affect his video editing?
(we live in canada, so no cheap cards for us :( )

The video cards GPU does not have anything to do with video editing or endcoding. The computers CPU,mem,HDD are factors in video editing.
The faster your cpu is, and the more memory you have, and the more hard drive space, all the better.

What does your friend use to capture the video to the computer? Firewire? dedicated TV/Capture card? ATI AIW?

What method does your friend currently use to capture video?

You can't do that with a 9800Pro unless it is an All-in-wonder edition like his 9000 aiw, which puts the price even higher.
