No improvement in what?

(Be specific, please.)

I agree... Let's see he bought a good graphics card to go with an anemic processor. Dump the processor.

9800 Pro >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GeForce4 MX420

Even with a lousy Celeron there should be a huge improvement. Have your friend run Driver Cleaner if he hasn't already and torch the old Nvidia and ATI drivers and install the Catalysts. Then try 3DMark03and see if the score compares to most other 9800 Pros.

CPU and RAM are probably both limiting him.

Throwing another 512 on there would help, along with OC'ing the processor.

Intel actually didn't make a 2.26ghz Celeron. Could it be a 2.2ghz or maybe even 2.66ghz Celeron D?

I ask, because there's a significant difference between the two... More than just 460mhz.

Should see a massive improvement- i know celerys suck and all- but not that bad- and 512mb RAM should be fine, thats exactly the upgrade i did, and the difference between the kards (heh) was incredible even with my 2000+ at stock 🙂

Check his bios settings and all- graphics aperture, AGP setting etc, although they shouldn't screw him that badly....

Also are you sure its not the 9800 pro SE -- there is a large performace diff between the SE and non SE versions -- still should own over the mx420 though, I suspect game settings though.... and maybe your expectations are too high? on medium settings doom 3 still wont get you over 30-35 frames with your new specs..... the old specs should have been pushing the teens..... barely?

well thats close 2 what a 9800pro should be getting- his gf4mx will get 300 odd if he's lucky in 3dmark03

your cpu is crap, come on, a celeron?!?!?!? now for the helpful part: reinstall your os, its usually quicker than dealing with removing drivers fully. another major thing: go in bios and set agp fast writes to ON BEFORE you install your os. this makes a HUGE difference. i did a little experiment with only changing wether the setting was on or off and got a bout 13000 3dm01 with them off, but 170003dm01 when they were on. this was done with a 9700pro
