My fathers computer is the following...AMD XP Barton 2500+, 1 GB PC3200 Ram, Soltek Nforce 2 Ultra Motherboard, 128 MB ATI (Sapphire) Radeon 9800 Pro, 80 GB (Maxtor) HDD, 40 GB (WD) HDD, 350 Watt Antec SmartPower PS, 19' Benq LCD. Its a computer I built him 2-3 yrs ago. He mostly uses it for Internet and photo editing.
My father called me last a couple weeks ago stating his computer has been acting funny with many errors and such. Then it quit booting. It would load the inital boot screen but freeze with white dots all over the screen. So I made the drive to dads to take a look...and I opened the side up..and at the bottom lays the Fan off the video card. The 9800 Pro was fried. I remove the video card and replace it with an old card I had 4-5 yrs ago that was kicking around the house...a PowerVR Kyro II 64 MB agp 2x video card. I checked everything else inside the case...seemed to be fine, made sure the Kyro was seated good...and booted the PC up...
The computer boots fine...no problems at all..but the computer would not install the drivers from the PowerVR website...(2 versions on it, 1.6 and 2 beta) It states "the card cannot be found". I reseated the card, screwed around for 30 mins and got the same results...so I formated the computer, reloaded a fresh XP on it...and I get the same results...Doesn't recognize the card...and when I install the driver manually, in device manager it has a exclamation point on it.
Is it possible there is damage to the AGP port on the motherboard? One thing to consider is the fan on the Kyro II doesn't work, and there is no heatsink, just a fan, but I ran that video card for a long time this way to the day I upgraded and it worked fine. I'd like to be able to use this Kyro II card as it was serve my fathers purpose greatly without spendin $50 on a cheap AGP video card like a FX5200. Any suggestions to help me getting it work?
Right now Im typing from dads computer...running a PCI S3 Trio 64 1MB video card!!!! woooo...the color on this LCD is downright terrible...need some help quickly!!
