Okay, here's the story. Friend is running a Geforce 2 MX, so definitely time for an upgrade (he just saw HL2 and crapped his pants).

I suggested the 9800 Pro 128MB since I'm partial to ATI, but have also heard good things about the 6600GT for a bit more bang for the buck (~$190 vs. $220).

What do you guys think? I'm completely out of the video side of things these days...I am writing this using a TNT2.

Any help appreciated.

6600 GT is for the most part superior, but since the AGP version just came out it's selling at a premium, try to wait a week or two and see if the price doesn't come down $20-$30

i think the review posted on this site said there is no reason to buy a 9800pro anymore now that the 6600gt agp is out.

Yep, 6600GT over 9800P. But I think the cheapest 6600GT is currently $230. At that price, I'd recommend you go with the $250 BFG 6800OC at Outpost.

Edit: A GF2MX, tho? I hope he has a decent CPU to pair with a 6600/6800. He might also consider a used 9700P or 9800P for ~$110 or ~$150.

The CPU is a XP1800+, if I remember correctly.

At this point the CPU is not the bottleneck but the video is - the system runs pretty zippy as far as he is concerned, but it can't even run Unreal Tournament without a few coughs and sneezes. Of course, I suppose moving up to a faster processor - ~2GHz or higher could be an option at this point, I suppose, given that CPU prices have bottomed out.

theres a thread in the hot deals forum for a 6600 for $220 at buy.com... and a $15 coupon floating around. someone got it for $217 shipped.

unfortunately that's still too expensive for my taste... which is why i'm waiting for the 9800s to start dropping. :D
