9800 Pro Display Issues...

M16Grenadier

Well, I have a 9800 Pro in my system which I use for gaming (BF2, Source, Civilization 4, and a few others.)

I seem to be having problems with it, usually display errors in BF2 and Source-based games.

I usually see discolored textures every few tiles or so in BF2, on the terrain (sometimes they will be black, other times colors like purple, green, etc.) I also see these boxes in the sky of source games, notably CS:Source Map cs_assault and the new DOD:S map dod_kalt.

I'm having trouble pinning down this display problem. My case temps are hovering no higher than 30 C, and I don't think that would be high enough to overheat the case.

Any ideas what this problem could be, and any proper solutions?

Thanks.

which drivers are you using? has it always been this way or just recently started?

i am thinking it must be drivers. I just switched platforms (kept the same video card) and started getting those problems in BF2 with the new install.
I was thinking maybe my instal got fubared somehow. But now i'm thinking it was because I used new drivers with the new install.

i also have a 9800pro btw. i'm gonna try an older driver and let you know if it helps me.

I was using the 5.11 Cats, and then put the 6.1s on, but the same problem still happened.

I'm going to take your advice and try some different drivers again.

WOw our systems are very similar.
i have:
opteron 146@2.5
asrock dual 939
1gig pc3200 dual channel
9800pro
audigy2zs

I'm afraid it may be a problem with the mainboard agp driver?
have you ever played on that rig without those problems?

When I first built my rig, I think I didn't have those problems with misdrawn textures or whatnot, then again I built this rig pretty recently so I could be thinking of my old one.

I had a crashing problem instead though, especially after an hour of gaming on this rig, but that went away (probably those pesky Audigy drivers 😛).

can you get some older cats? (i think guru3d has the old ones still available). development for something new might have broken something old.

I'm using the 5.5 cats now.

The discoloration is gone...

but I have had 2 VPU recover errors and then a locking up of my PC (and nice loud bursting sounds coming out of my speakers) just playing Day of Defeat: Source for 15 minutes alone.

Maybe I have a bad card that decided to go within the last month or so?

Edit: Oh yeah, tryed again, got a static image on my monitor and the display got all garbled, requiring a restart.

Eh, I'm gonna take an old TNT2 I have and throw it in here for the time being.

Probably am going to have to RMA the card, unless anyone else has suggestions.

what version of the Uli AGP driver are you using? you could try using version 2.1 instead of 2.3. As described here, some people have reported problems with 2.3(the version on the supplied CD). worth a shot...

I'm using the ones from the website already... I'm going to try reinstalling it though.

I have an Athlon XP 3000, VIA VT600 chipset, etc.

Each time the card went bad I tried diff drivers, PCs, etc. The whole ordeal eventually lead to a partial system rebuild replacing power supply, mobo, and vid card. After the 3rd RMA, I sold the card right after I got my RMA back before it could hose out again. I'm once again a happy Nvidia customer for a long time.
