heres my problem
I have a 9600 SE that cant barely run cs source and it lags

should I buy a 9800 pro used or new cheap around christmas?

or should I save up some money and buy a 6600 gt or x700 around chrsitmas?

all I need this card for is WOW when it comes out and Half Life 2

this is how I look at the situation, whats the point of spending $200 on a newer graphics card that I will probably end up upgradeing in a year or so when I can spend around $100 for a 9800 pro that will get the job done and then I save 100 dollars or more.

any advice would be apretiated
and the rest of my system is fine so no need to wasteing a post asking about the rest of my system

I'm in the same situation.
I was stupid, I should of get a better card when I built my system, but I kept on thinking that a Radeon 9600 will serve my need.

CPU: Athlon64 3200+
CPU Cooling Fan: KINGWIN 80mm CPU Fan for Athlon64/ Opertron, Model "K8CU-8025"
Motherboard: SOLTEK "SL-K8AN-RL" nForce3 150 Chipset Motherboard
RAM: Mushkin 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200
Hard Drive Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model DS722580VLSA80
Video Card: SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9600 Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP
DVD Burner: NEC 8X Black DVD+RW/-RW Drive
CD-ROM: ASUS Black 52X QuieTrack Technology CD-ROM Drive
Floppy: SONY Black 1.44MB 3.5inch Floppy Disk

I am considering to get a refurbished card so that it can be cheaper. I'm considering this right now...
Refurbished Crucial Radeon 9800pro Any suggestion or I should wait till thanksgiving black friday deal or christmas?

Similar quandary myself. I'm leaning towards buying a 6800np--Pricewatch has 'em for around $270. Should last me 2+ years? (I'm slow to adopt new tech--my current vid card is a ti4200) Like you, my other choice is the 9800pro, but it's overpriced due to high demand, IMO.

beyonddc, maybe you just need to turn down some of the settings in Source. A 9600np should be fine with lower settings and resolution.

The 6600GT beats the 9800 Pro in a considerable amount of tests, and they both cost about the same so get the 6600GT.

P.S. OT but...1000 posts, wOOt! :D

i had a 9800 pro and loved it!!! rapid on dx9 games. infact only to games challenged it.
FAR CRY - 1024*768 32bpp highest settings = playable but limit
Doom 3 : 1024 *768 32bpp ULTRA = playable but lacking that smoothness, pauses when open doors etc.

to me this was a bitch cause i have to play everything fullo on at 16*12,m and doom 3 humiliated the 9800 pro ( relativly, it actually did very well, but im a snob!! )
everything else was a1 on it and it was a great card. if u can get one cheap go for it!!
however if u can wait for a bridged 6600GT then by all means do, ull get 9800 pro dx performance with doom 3 shiftyness ;)

karlos
p.s i just noticed u liking your source engine games?? ive seen good things on source for the 9800pro, should run everything smooth at full detail 1280*1024 :D ( with a decent cpu/mobo/ram of course )

why arent people recommending the plain 6800? you can get that for $270 and still have great performance with next gen games.

HL2 has gone gold btw, Will be out in a couple of weeks :)

Btw, just a question to the original poster, why are you choosing WoW over EQ2? I personally find EQ2 more diversified and gameplay wise better. Graphically wise, EQ2 wins hands down.

$175 for a used 9800P? Just wait a few weeks for a new $200 AGP 6600GT, or go for a $250 6800 (BFG @ Outpost, PNY @ Circuit City this week AR) and try to unlock the extra quad for a 16-pipe card on the relatively cheap.

NewEgg has new R9800Pros for $155 shipped- don't bother going refurb if you decide to buy it.

Etryter, I'm sorry, you have just been disqualified from all current and future discussion for using the word "ROX". Imbecile.

"9800pro, but it's overpriced due to high demand, IMO."

???? no offense - but there a lot of excellent second-hand 9800 pro:s out there!!!!!

best 3d-cards today IMO:

1. 9800 Pro (second hand or new)
2. 6800GT
3. X800XT / 6800Ultra

yes - there are big jumps in terms of price etc but a really woldn't
consider anything in between. The 6600Gt looks nice though but
we're taking about what's available today....

Are you sure those aren't the inferior 128bit versions?

Eh? You said nothing offensive, so why should I be offended?
Still, I do think that 9800Pro is overpriced. The price hasn't changed in months! New ones are ~$200+/- and used ones are ~$175+/-
The delta is too small between new and used to justify used; and I know that if I buy the 9800pro, the price will immediately drop the next week :D (Hence, I just ordered a 6800nu from Outpost)

ok... you propably did wise there. The 6800nu:s are not bad at all!

Used ones 175? ok... I'm beginning to see your point. I live in sweden
and here used ones can be picked up for as low as 100-125!!! Guess
that everyone wanted the new 6800 / X800 series...
