9800 AIW $303 9800 Pro $239 No Rebates Retail

I swiped the shelf tag from Best Buy today that clearly says that the 9800 pro will get a free HL2. The problem is that the 9800 pro is not one of the cards that ATI puts stickers on, and according to ATI the 9800 pro does not qualify for the free game. Somehow I am going to get BB to pay for the game or something.....🙂

I had a very irritating time at my local Best Buy, attempting to get a price match. I bought a 9800Pro there about two weeks ago, and then bought another from Microcenter a few days ago after seeing this thread. I wanted to have Best Buy price adjust to Microcenter's price and get the additional 10% of the difference. Why not?

The greasy geek at customer service kept me for almost 10 minutes while he called to verify that it was in stock at Microcenter, despite a huge line behind me (which I had waited about 30 minutes in). Of course, it was out of stock at Microcenter.

I explained, nicely, that it shouldn't make one bit of difference whether it is in stock because I already have one. The purpose of the adjustment policy is to keep people from shopping elsewhere, and the stock check is done to determine whether a customer really could buy the item from a competitor. I explained that I had already purchased from Microcenter, and it was my choice whether to return a card to Best Buy or Microcenter--in other words, Best Buy could keep my sale under the terms of its policy, or it could refuse the price adjustment, see me return the card, and lose my business. He didn't care, and I returned my card to Best Buy.

I wonder what the president and/or stockholders would think about this use of "policy".

I know this is more of a rant, but be forewarned if you look for a price match or adjustment from another store.

Thanks for the heads up BBQ. I picked up one of the 9800 Pro cards this evening at the Madison Hts/Troy Michigan store. I called this morning to see if they had any in stock. They had already sold 3 of the 6 cards by the time I got there. If anyone is interested, they still had 2 more 9800 Pro cards and I believe they still had a few AIW 9800 Pro cards. Just call and check.

Hmmm, I figured out it would be a hour and a half drive to the store in troy. Not sure if it's worth it or not. From what it looks like you need a microcenter store near you to be able to get BB or CC to PM, has anyone tried PMing without haveing a MC near by?

I notice that on Tom's review for video cards that the high end video card acheived FPS of over a hundred. However, i believe i have heard before that our human eye cannot notice a difference of more then 30 FPS. Anyone has any comments on this?

The human eye can definitely percieve a difference over 30 fps. There have been studies to prove that a human can percieve the difference between an animation running close to 300 fps compared to that of 150 fps. However, it is around 72-75 fps that the human eye percieves almost perfect smoothness, so something around that should make for a good experience. The values in tom's review are the average fps, so in heavy action it will dip below the average, thus the higher the average, the better the gaming experience all around.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Gotta love Google cache. Worked great for a price match.

For those of you who have backordered AIWs, I spoke to a MicroCenter representative this afternoon, and she said her product manager informed the staff that the AIWs should be arriving and shipping by the end of this week.

I got in the 9800 Pro Deal at Comp-USA, It was not easy though. Since Microcenter took down the page it was listed on I didn't have any proof to show them, The cached page on google is not enough as they verify it is in stock. I got lucky though, The CSR called Microcenter and asked them if they had it and the price, They quoted them the price but said they where OOS as everyone knows. The CSR had to go to the manager and the manger asked what cost was on the card and he said 245.00 and then he said go ahead. So basically I got the card at less than cost via a price match on something that wasn't even in stock at MicroCenter.
Needless to say I have never had Comp-USA DO ANYTHING like this before as they are usually very strict with their policies.

Received the 9800Pro AIW today from Staples and this card is awesome... not only the graphics, but also the tv tuner functionality w/ remote!!! I bought this item w/ PM to Microcenter for $287 (including tax + free case of paper). And what made this deal better is that since I didn't not received my product on time (supposed to be last friday 1/2/04), the sales rep lady stated that she will mail me a $30 gift credit to spend at Staples! which makes this card costing $257.

It is interesting that most companies now are clearing these out of their inventory. I guess the XT's are hard to sell if you have these sitting next to them for a lot less.

Did anyone actually receive a 9800 pro(not aiw) from Microcenter?

Not yet, ordered about a week and a half ago. Hoping it comes soon. If not I may just cancel.

I'm in the same boat... I was just wondering. I've seen a lot of messages about successful price matches(staples) and in-store pick ups, but not one where someone says they ordered it and it arrived.

Called Microcenter today(Thursday)... the lady said they were scheduled to receive more on the 12th. (crossing fingers)
