'98 Ford Contour won't start, any suggestions?

My girlfriends 98 contour decided not to start yesterday(Thanksgiving). Basically, when you turn the key it cranks, but it never starts/turns over. For the past few months, it has sometimes hesitated a bit went starting. In other words, it doesn't turn over immediately, you would sometimes need to rank it for 5-20 seconds before it would turn over. Here is a link to the recalls and technical service bulletins for teh car.. She has the V6 Sport edition. Is there any way to check fuel pressure? Also, is there anyway to verify the electrical system is working correctly?

EDIT: I checked the intake a made sure nothing was blocking it, and it was clear.
 
65,000 miles. The spark plugs were changed within the past year, and I don;t believe the fuel filter has ever been replaced.

Unless he is very mechanically inclined, he won't be able to diagnose the problem at home. New cars like that one are very complicated. It is best left to a dealership or trusted mechanic.

With that said: is it getting any spark? This is the primary test. If no, then could be your coil packs, or ingintion controller. If yes, then check for the basics: fuel and air.

But he is still better off getting a mechanic to find the problem.

 
There should be a red LED above the climate controls that blinks steadily when the car is off. When the car is on, I believe it blinks a couple times in quick succession when started and then stays off. Does it do anything different now? On my 99 Contour SE, a month after I bought it, it stopped starting for some strange reason. Turned out the computer had failed and it was replaced under warranty.
You should probably get it towed to your Ford dealer or to someone who can do a thorough check on the health of your car. Yes, you'll pay out the butt for repairs, but it's still cheaper than buying a new car.

EDIT: Forgot to add that MWilding, a longtime AT member, is a Contour enthusiast and might be able to help you. Also you should check out the Contour.org website and forums.
