Tomorrow, my new setup will be finished. I am planning on eventually to dual boot to Win2K. Other than a smattering of extras, is there any difference in performance between 98 and SE?

Epox 8HKA+
AMD 1700XP
256 DDR 2100
Voodoo 3K
Aureal Vortex 2
HP 9100 R/RW
Toshiba 6X DVD
10 gig WD

I know - might be a dumb question, but I had to ask. Some of it might be a bit dated, but yougot to start somewhere!!

98SE is simply the most stable and mature version of 98.

I'd upgrade your 98 to 98SE and download the updates as well from the Microsoft site.

Contrary to many opinions I've read on these forums, I think a well-maintained installation of 98SE is a very good OS for most applications.

Hope this helps!

I concur, too. Take a fully updated 98SE for games (if you have to) and 2k for the rest.
By now I have only 2k left and can't say I'm sorry to use the Win98SE partition now for pagefile.sys

But SE ist still better than the other 9x or even ME.

98se had ICS, and some other sheet.... can't remember the other large differences, but i'm sure thier are tons of small ones.

the vortex2 will be your only consistant problem i can see.. not that i don't love those cards, but with a DOA company drivers are an issue. i had one myself(MX300) but ditched that into another rig after drivers stopped being compatible. come to think about it the v3 is another driver thing....

i think at this point i should ask what cpu/mobo/ram combo you replaced?

Isn't 98SE just an official rerelease of 98 with a lot of the Windows Updates preapplied? So he wouldn't have to go out and buy/steal a new 98SE CD, correct?

Nope, there *ARE* a few things you can't download, i.e. ICS.
IMHO a fresh and clean install of SE + plus updating is the best.

As far as I can see, everything is up and running. Ran into a few glitches, but was able to work around. I'm using Altec Lansing 305 speakers, the Aureal is good, but when I loaded the software to enable the digital controls, the speakers wouldn't let the system shut down. I was able to disable that for now. VirusScan 5won't get past the windows startup screen, but I think that that is an installer version prob (disabled for now). Everything else is flying smoothly. Pushing the system and I top out at 46 degrees and 29 at rest.

Replacing a P3 450, Biostar M6TBA mobo and 128 sdram

98SE is the best implementation of the 9x OS that MS ever came out with (or likely ever will). "ME" was just a half-hearted attempt, in my opinion, to squeeze a few extra bucks out of a dying OS. They knew that Windows XP Home was just months away when they released it. It is just a re-hash of 98SE, with a few changes, that seem to make it overall a bit less stable (read: ME should have been a service pack - and if it had been, I probably would have chosen not to install it). :)

If you are running 98SE, keep it, or install a version of WinXP if you can afford it. Win2k is also a good OS.
