9700 Problem

I have a ATI 9700 Pro retail installed in an ASUS A7N8X. The problem I seem to be having is that even though fastwrites are enabled in the bios when I go to the smartgart tab in the ATI properties it says fastwrites are off. When I set it to on and reboot it resets them to off. Does anyone have any ideas how I would go about correcting this problem, I am running out of things I can think of doing.

Thanks for any help

I would try some different drivers. I found that the officeal catalyst 2.4s (6200) perform worse than the beta 2.4s (6193) on my system. I think the reason they are turned off is there may have been some instabilities with fast writes on with that particular chipset.

Could be your mb so try the latest bios. Sorry don't know anything else it could be other than the drivers or the mb.

i had that problem too, among others, what i actually ended up doing was deleting the drivers, updating my bios, reintalling the drivers and it worked

in fact, i didnt even have to enable fast write, it was already enabled

There isnt a new bios out yet for my board, so I guess I will just have to wait.

The thing that is bothering me, that probably isnt related to the fastwrite thing, is that I cant run Unreal Tournament at full detail setings @ 1024 x 768 with Antilas. Off. It works fine when im running straight and turning, but when i strafe it gets choppy. I dont think I should be having this problem with a 2600, 512 ram and the 9700 pro should I?

what chipset is the Asus board based on?

I use the KT400 chipset (although i have Gigabyte) and have no problems

like most other posts I recommend getting powerstrip for better diagnostics in windows...

go over to www.amdmb.com and check their forums out. Under Asus Motherboards, check the sticky A7N8X out, it's a long but good read. I remember they mentioned something about fast-writes, and that it's only enabled if the ATI drivers "think" it's safe.

SmartGart will disable certain features if it detects they will not work correctly on your system. Try installing the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your system (and don't overclock anything) to see if that helps.
