i found one at my local compusa on clearance for $199 is that a good price, i wasnt sure so i didnt buy it. Built by ATI

Can they be softmodded/OC'ed in any form with out extra cooling

Thanks for the help

they cant be soft modded that i know of.... but yea thats a pretty dang good deal... 9700 pro overclocked is as good as a 9800pro... and imo, 9700 pro > 9800np. Was it in a retail box? if so, even better

well i cant prove it.. but thats why i said "imo".... 9700 pro runs almost to par with 9800 pro...... 9800np would probably run same as 9700 pro.... but again thast just my opinion....

softmodded to what? a 9800 pro? no, they cant. 9700 pro is R300 core 9800 pro is R350. thats a great deal on the card though
Actually, I believe they can. IIRC, Omega's drivers include the 9700>9800 softmod. I also recall that perhaps the Cat 3.7 drivers had already included the same so-called softmod(9700to9800) optimizations or whatever they are.

They are included since Cat 3.5 I believe, and it's sure cat 3.7 and 3.8 have them. They are some optimizatons for AA & AF I think. R300 core and R350 are phisically different, so R300 can't be turned into R350.

A 9700 pro for the price he mentioned is a VERY good deal. Enjoy it!

theres no way a different chipset can be modded to another different chipset.. just think about it, thats gotta be bogus. thats like saying, i wanna mod my nForce2 chip to an nForce3... just doesnt work that way =\, i would think?

I bought my 9700pro off of ebay, retail package, ac3, and a couple fans for 250 shipped... not too bad of a deal

I think the "soft mod" in this case is simply a term for using the the same driver optimizations for the R300 as the R350 (and remember, this was from before R350 was even launched IIRC), not for turning a r300 core "into" a r350 core. The chipsets themselves are not "that" much different from each other........ there is quite a large difference between NF2 & NF3 however.

I have a built by ATI 9700 Pro, one of the last ones they made in that model. I can o/c it to 400/355 with no artifacts on stock cooling. Love mine, seems like a good deal for you.
