9700 pro vs 9800 pro

I had both cards. at low resolutions they are the same. However at 1280x1024 and above the 9800Pro wins. Also when I was playing the games feel a lot smoother with the 9800pro than the 9700.

9700 Pro is awsome, its 10fps less than the 9800 XT, so why not save yourself much mula and just get the 9700 Pro.

The difference is that the 9800's architecture was tweaked for more performance.

A 9800 XT, though is nice with 256MB or VRAM.

Depends on the app. Usually a 9800pro will do anywhere from 10% to 25% better then a 9700pro. If you can afford it I would recommend the 9800pro.

well i had a 9800 np but it died 🙁

so now i have a 9700 pro but i just wanted to know what the subtle differences were...

good to see there isn't anything too big except core/mem speeds...

🙂

There are a few differences:

SMARTSHADER 2.1 improves upon the DX9 SMARTSHADER 2.0 in the 9700 Pro. A new F-Buffer has been introduced into the R350 and RV350 that makes it possible to execute pixel shader programs with an unlimited number of instructions without the performance overhead associated with multi-passing the rendering pipeline. Do not confuse this with the R350 not having to work harder to accomplish a longer shader though. This also fully allows for OpenGL 2.0 fragment shader support

ATi has optimized the memory controller for even greater performance of AA and AF at higher resolutions. They now have what they call 2nd Generation 6XAA/16XAF.

HyperZ III, ATi?s Z compression scheme has also been improved for the 9800 Pro. ATi has enhanced the Z-cache so that it is more flexible and better optimized to work with stencil buffer data. This allows for better stencil shadow volume performance.

When I switched from a 9700pro to the 9800pro, I gained a little over 2000 pts in 3dmark 2001, went from the low 18's to low 20's overclocked.
