OK gurus, got my install disks this afternoon and attempting install, problem already, install is deffering me to CL install instead of GUI as it will not/can not identify my 9700 pro apparently. I've downloaded the drivers which are now in a folder in XP named Linux. Question, how do I direct the install to these files? Have tried several things to no avail.

Also, anyone have any expierience with the new Sony DVD everything /CD-RW drives? It appears Mandrake 9 will also not be identifing this, it is so far shown as no more then a plain CD-ROM drive.

OK, just finished writing the driver to CD and am going to attempt to install them from that source. Considering I'm an "EN" (extreme newb" with Linux, is there anything I should know about installing the driver from disk?

Yes, the DVD/CD burner will not recognize anything but regular CD-rom media. Will not detect blank DVD or CD media, nor DVD's.

Gonna get this figured out before next year!;) Want to be in KDE and working, then I'll be happy with todays progress and set new goals for tomorrow!

OK, got past the 9700 Pro problem and the DVD/CD RW Drive problem, got mandrake 9 installed as i wanted, got into KDE desktop, got online and got my mail, rebooted, apparently LILO hosed my MBR. all I got was L 99 99 99 99 99 (etc.) but no bootloader. rebuilt 2K/XP mbr and I'm sure I now hosed Linux boot. What went wrong and why did this happen? How do I avoid this problem and allow the choice of booting to 2K/XP/Mandrake in the future?

need some advice Linux Gurus...............;) I know there's a way to make this work, but, point blank truth, I'm not smart enough in Linux as of now to acheive this and I need some help!

At the stage of the install when mandrake (I'm assuming it did, every flavour of linux that I've installed always asked me to) asked you to make a rescue floppy, did you? If so, boot off of that and then edit /etc/lilo.conf to add windows to the boot selection.
How did you solve your first two problems?

Yes, have boot floppy made during first installation attempt. Thing is, even with the floppy, I'm getting a "boot failure" message after attempting to boot with the floppy. At this point, as mentioned, I'm more concerned with how to prevent this from happening the next time I install. Sould I use Grub or what? I actually did add both 2K & XP to the bootloader on prior attempts and received "L 99 99 99 (etc)" after each attempt as well as boot failure from use of boot disk.

The first problem was solved by putting the files on a CD and loading them through CD once installed.:)

Pop in the CD again and run a upgrade but don't upgrade anything and also make sure you choose expert instead of beginner ! Just go through the motions of the upgrade without selecting or installing anything and when you get to the point of installing the boat-loader choose fd0 ( this is your floppy drive ) instead of hda1 in the boot-loader config screen and pop in a blank formatted floppy. Finish up with upgrade and reboot using the boot-disk floppy from now on instead of messing with your MBR. Now if X doesn't pop up then that means that during the upgrade your XFR86Config-4 file ( located in the diretory /etc/X11 ) was overwritten and renamed. Either rename your old file back to the orginal thus overriding any changes made by MDK or re-install the drivers and you should be set to go. Make sure you update your system and after that visit this site and set up urpmi for TexStar's, PLF's and Mandrake's Main, and Contrib ftp sites.

http://plf.zarb.org/%7Enanardon/urpmiweb.php

This will set up a repository of online stuff you can easliy download and not worry about dependecies using MDK's Control Center Package manager. Also from TexStar's ftp you can get the apt-get and synaptic ( GUI front end for apt-get ) packages. Both urpmi and apt-get together provide you with very useful tools in terms of installing apps, maintianing and upgrading your system. I use apt-get/synaptic to upgrade my system off TexStars site because he always provideds the latest rpms for you to use and download. You can even make request for certian packages if you go to his site and visit the forums.

As for the PLF site they provide certian packages that for legal reason MDK can not provide like the DVD player OGLE for example. Now the Contrib repository allows you to have access to user made packages for MDK and the Main is so that you can download any other MDK files that you would normally need to pop in your cd for. You don't really need to include the Main repository but if your lazy like me and don't like poping in CD's and you got broadband access it something that is very useful for us lazy folk. :)
