That's a good price for a nice card. You'll be able to play Half Life and Doom3 at decent res without aa/af at decent fps I think.
No you won't. However $100 is a good deal so if that's the limit of your budget then go for it.

Have you forgot the lessons of Shady Days you used to yell about all the time BFG?
10X7, 70fps on a 9700P

The keyword(s) are "decent resolution". For any hardcore gamer that has experienced high res gaming, going back to something like 1024x768 is unacceptable - its like going back to marijuana after you've had cocaine. That and the acceptable 1280x1024 gives you 50 fps which is borderline unacceptable considering its below the golden 60fps. Maybe it would work for the single player games but not for competition.

But for gamers that aren't so hardcore 1024x768 is more than acceptbale and so is 50fps...

Well, Bunny, the fact of the matter is to get signicantly better performance than his 9700Pro at those games he'd have to spend $300 on a 6800NU. That's 3X what he wants to spend. What is there he could buy for less than $300 that would be a significantly better HL2/D3 card than a 9700Pro?

I answered the question, you nitpicked semantics.

yeah I have a 9700np that runs just a bit over 9700pro speeds and I fully intead to run doom3 and Hl2 on it. most likely at 1024 but if I cana verage more hat 50ish fps i'll do 1280

9700 Pro can pull 40+ fps in Doom 3, so yes...it can.
It's a shame that 40 FPS average isn't even remotely decent.

Have you forgot the lessons of Shady Days you used to yell about all the time BFG?
Not only is that just one benchmark, it's also from Sept 2003. Also other benchmarks show the 9800 Pro @ 1024x768 achieving a barely acceptable 60 FPS average.

if a 9700pro can't run D3 and HL2 well then they aren't going to sell that many games are they?
There are games right now that can't run on a 9700 Pro very well.

its like going back to marijuana after you've had cocaine.
LOL!

Nobody's saying the card isn't a good price. All I'm saying is to not get delusional about its capabilities.

I have no delusions about the 9700Pros performance BFG, I used one a long time.

Just saying for a man with $100, this is it.

A $200 9800Pro would only net him 10% more performance at twice the price.

The 9700Pro is still a great card. It beats some of the benchmarks of the "128MB" model of the 9800pro.

I just picked up a 9700pro for 140.00 shipped because I thought that was a good price for an OEM version with a 1 year warranty. I got it from Ebay. The guy has 30 cards from 30 unsold machines that he disassembled to sell in parts.

Doom 3 and Half Life 2 were already in the works even before the 9700Pro was released. The game developers will not release games that can only be played on 10% of computers.

If the game developers want to make any money at all, they will release a game that can be played on 90% of the computers, maybe not at 1600X1200 but a good experience at 1024X768.

Listen to what we are saying, were are talking like the Radeon 9700pro is a low end card. I will admit that it is the best card you can buy for $100.00 but as far as playing HL2 and Doom3, it certainly will not be considered low end.

FarCry recommends at least a 9500Pro. I'm just rambling now but I still like the card for $150.00 or less.

Here are the latest digitlife halflife 2 beta benchmarks. A 9700 Pro will perform at around the same level as the 9800. Keep in mind though these are beta benches.

Anyway looking at these benches, I don't think I'll be able to run 1600x1200 4x/8x on this game. 🙁

I agree with most. I got lucky and got mine for $150 off a friend who upgraded to a 9800 well over a year ago and I have had nothing but love for the card. For $100 it will be the best card that can possibly be had for Doom III and HL II.
