9700 / 9800 Pro owners -- any gaming issues?

For those that have a 9700 or 9800, are ATI's drivers finally as good as nvidia's used to be before the "performance" AA and cheating fiascoes?

Assuming you aren't having general problems from not doing a fresh OS install, are you having problems in any specific games?

Also, does anyone have a link to some master list of known game problems, if one exists?

I'm used to my geforce3 and older det drivers "just working" for every game I throw at them, but now that I'm thinking of a Radeon for my next PC I'd like a better sense of what to expect.

i just upgraded from a gf2-gts which i loved. had no problems with it.

i got the 9800 and every game i try, it plays perfect. im just as happy with the ati as i was with the nvidia's iv had.

only thing i had to do was a program called reforce that forces refresh rates in games.

I'm in the same boat as you . I'll be upgrading from an older Elsa GeForce2 GTS 32mb to one of the newer cards . My first thought (and it made perfect sense at the time) , was to go with a 9700Pro , but with all the ATI driver issues that I've been reading on this board & elsewhere , I'm not too sure .
I do my research before buying & I don't just go to one site for information 😉

My second thought was to purchase a 5600Ultra from somewhere like BestBuy & exchange it with a 5900 non Ultra mdl.
Trying to time this right could prove painful because you only have 30days to return or exchange & I'm not sure when the 5900 non ultras are going to hit retail shelves 🙂

All I know is I want the Performace of a 9700Pro at around $300. ............ If I have to take a "SMALL" performance hit over a 9700Pro , I will do so & purchase the 5900 non ultra .

So far I have no issues with any game and I play quite a lot of them. I heard Asherons Call 2 has some issues but that's pretty much it.

i dont have any issues with the 9800Pro ... but my gf does! if she could, she'd microwave it 😀

i have tons of issues with my 9700pro... the opengl image quality is horrible...
maybe it's windows2003... AA/AF doesn't work with cat 3.4, textures are just blurry as hell with 3.2

headaches..
but most of the people have better luck than me..

So you're using Windows Server 2003 as your OS, or do you mean XP?

...and thanks to everyone who's replied so far. After re-reading the TomsHardware 5900 article and seeing the 9800 pro beat the 5900 in Doom3 at 1024x768 in High Quality mode, I'm really leaning towards the 9800 Pro.

Doom3: 5900 only faster in MEDIUM not HIGH at 1024

Heh, I'd only take Tom's Hardware with a grain of salt.

Of course, but this was an nvidia-sponsored look at Doom3 performance, and the fx5900 did win at medium quality and medium with AA just like in the AT article, so there's no reason to believe that Toms is wrong about the High Quality benchmarks.

Also, from both articles the 9800 Pro will get over 40 fps in medium quality with 4xAA at 1024x768, so it should be playable with your choice of medium+AA or high with no AA. for about $120 less the 9800 looks like a good deal.

Yeah im a total nvidia supporter only because theyve been the best by a landslide at the times i've purchased video cards. However, it has been about a year since ive purchased a card, and alot has changed since then.

I honestly think that the computer i am purchasing within the next few weeks will contain an ati card inside, probably the 9800 np.

I have a decent sized library of games (old and new), and the ONLY problem I have come across on my 9700pro is in Nascar Racing 2002 Season - Hardware T&L has issues in Direct3d. But that is more Papyrus's fault than ATI's, since the game was written towards nvidia.

I've run accross an Issue remapping keys using Cat 3.4's, The poster mentions Everquest, but I noticed it with UT2003, WolfET, UT, Q3A and MOHAA. (I use the default keys, so Its a non-issue for me) otherwise I find them excellent drivers.

Thanks, did you try the fix in that thread:
Turn off the ATI key poller service and that will fix the problem
and if so did it help?

Ive never had any game related problems with my 9700pro whatsoever. Apart from the cat3.2, they made C&C stutter.
IMO, ATIs drivers are just as good as nVidias, in fact, i think i had more problems with my GF3Ti200@Ti500 in games than i had with my 9700pro.

Im using the cat 3.2's and have no issues to report other than the known HL/CS crash using the ESC key. There are supposed to be some minor texture problems with BF 1942 but I have not experienced them.
Getting 95+ FPS in all of these games with a 9700 Pro with a P4 3.06.

BF 1942 & RTR
Ravenshield
MOHAA
Sprearhead
GTA Vice City
RTCW ET
Half Life/CounterStrike

Tried it, still an issue with WolfET and Q3A. assigns "Shift" instead of the cursor arrow keys.

nothin better than a 9700 Pro so far. 5900 is gay - 3x the price, for 1.25x the perform, ance??! Gotta be NOT SMART to buy that. That being said, i luv my 9700 - no issues whatsoever. If i had any they are usually resolved by disabling/enabling some of the "advanced" graphic options.

only been playing shadowbane lately and since cat3.4 everything has been hunky dory on the video side. now if only they could get thier servers working worth a damn 🙁

My 9700 Pro 'was' the very best vcard I ever owned, and I owned most if not all since the first voodoo.......... It was fast, great visuals and (yes) great driver support.....

All that has changed now, I bought a 9800 Pro 😀😀😀😀

Life is good 😉
