9600XT > 9800 pro?

ok, several of my friends are claiming that the 9600xt is a faster card than the 9800 pro 128mb. This makes no sense to me because the 9800 has 8 pipelines rather than 4. Also, benchmarks obviously favor the 9800 pro. What do you guys think?

I think my friends are noobs...
 
Well, talking about GPU speed, they'd be right.
Talking about actual performance, as has been stated, they don't have a clue, ask them for a benchmark or two 🙂

rofl yea they are idiots. As you guys mentioned, they pointed out the 9600xt's higher clock speed. sigh...

So it doesn't suck as much. With video cards, pipelines * MHz basically gives the throughput.
The 9600 core is smaller, so probably simpler to manufacturer on top of being cheaper, so nice yields. Remeber, if even 1 pipeline on the 9800 doesn't work at the stock speed, it's useless, and goes into a 9800SE or is thrown out. With a 9600, you've got 1 out of 4 that can go wrong, and the 9800 1 of 8. Now also note that there are more units that can not work right as well. IIRC, the 9600's core is something like 3/5 the size of the 9800 core. Not quite 1/2, but still makes for better manufacturing value.

Probably the same reason we don't have quad-core 500m transistor CPUs in our PCs. Not economically viable.
 
Listen if your friends are too ignorant to know that the 9800 is way faster, there is no point even trying to prove it to them because if they were knowledgeable on the topic they wouldn't make a ludicrous comment like that. So don't even bother proving it to them.
 
Your freinds are stupid... If they meant the 9800SE they yeah it probably is but sure as hell not the pro.

The reason the 9600xt has a higher clock speed is that it is on the .13 micron process, the 9800 pro is on the .15 micron process
