For the same price as the 9500 or 9600 you can get Nvidia's TI4800 or TI4600 which are much faster then the 9600. Also, when Anti Aliasing is turned on, the Nvidia FX 5600 is faster then those two you are considering.

He probably wants something with dx9. And if you turn aa on on a ti4600 the performance will have a HUGE drop.

The 9600 pro will oc better, but the 9500 pro is faster at stock. If you can get them for about the same price, I'd go with the 9500 pro.

The 9500 PRO uses the same R300 core as the Radeon 9700 series. ATi just castrated the 9700's 256-bit memory pipeline to 128-bit for the 9500 PRO. The 9500 PRO is clocked lower too I think. That aside, the 9500 PRO will wipe the floor with the 5600 ULTRA when it comes to DX9, AF, and FSAA. If you can find a new 9500 PRO for a good price, buy it. The 9600 PRO is slower by default, but it does run cooler and quieter and without the additional power connector. When it comes to DX9 applications, the 9600 PRO has been shown to perform better than even a FX5900 Ultra, much less a 5600 Ultra.

yes you should be able to run max detail if not close to it w/ that setup. if you are set on picking between the 9600pro and the 9500pro, then i also vote for the 9500pro. like modedepe said, it is significantly faster at stock, and the 9600pro can only touch it if you OC it. if you can spare a little extra $, i'd get a 9700np for $200.

also, i've come to trust anandtech more than tom's hardware andd most other hardware reviewers, so unless there's hard evidence of this, i certainly cannot just discredit anandtech at the snap of a finger. knowing this, the TI4800 is only the AGP8X version of the Ti4400. the 4400 and 4600 are only marginally faster than the 9600pro. and w/ AA/AS enabled, the 9600pro pulls ahead of nVidia's flagship FX5900! (at least in anandtech's reviews...but believe what you want and take it w/ a grain of salt) so i don't know how the FX5600 could possibly be faster than a 9600pro...especially w/ AA/AS enabled.

up until now, i purchased mostly nVidia products. but times have changed, and i am not one of those loyal dogs who follows its master around unconditionally. my next card will be an ATI if i buy in the near future. who knows, maybe the tables will turn once more, but for now its blatantly obvious that ATI has the edge in the video market right now in both product performance and quality.
