Just now going to a e6600 and P5N-T SLi board from my old x2 3800 AMD setup. The 9600GT in SLI looks to be the best bang for the buck right now. I'm trying to figure out if i should do this or just try to be patient and grab a 8800gts and get another when some more money rolls in. Keep in mind i have some cash now, but who knows what i'll have in the future. My budget is around $225-$250. If i do go SLI, i know i'll need to step up sooner than if i am able to be patient. What would you guys do?

i suppose there is the idea that if you didnt need 2 cards, you could sell 1 if yo ugot the SLI. or you could save $60 or so now by just getting 1 8800gts.

if your budget is $250 i'd probably just go for a single 8800gts or a single 9600gt.

I'd probably get the GTS with your specs in mind. There's a good chance you may be happy with just that, and not even want to SLI until a new architecture rolls around.

Take a look at the benchmarks here on AT concerning the new 9800GTX.

Then go buy a shiny new 8800GTS 512MB card and be happy for the next year or so. By the time you feel the need to upgrade again the next generation (should be a real step up this time) cards will be out and will (probably) be faster than 8800GTS in SLI.

I like the Power, Heat, and performance numbers on the 9600GT, but I'd hold off awhile on getting one.
There seems to be a fair amount of people having "Black Screen" issues with this model. I can attest to this personally. I sent back my EVGA 9600GT KO a couple weeks ago for this exact reason - couldn't even play 5 minutes without the video dropping out.
It's not just the EVGA cards either, and it seems to be more prevalent if there is any kind of overclocking (factory) on the card.
I don't know if it's chip or power issue, but right now it's a crapshoot with these.

No luck on same day ship, but i got it yesterday and it KICKS ASS!!!! I'll be happy for quite a while! haven't tweaked *anything* yet so everything is running stock. Defaulted to all high at 1024x768 in crysis and it runs smooth as heck. Loaded a random "Very High" tweaked config off the net and it runs ~45-53 FPS at the same res. Now to start tweaking!! :D
