I am looking to buy a 9600 PRO and would like to find out which brands are the ones to stay away from and which ones are better. Also, I have read that cards with 256 megs are not worth the extra $$$ over the 128 meg ones?????? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes, 256mb offers absolutely no advantage. Don't waste your money there. The best 9600 models are ATI, Sapphire, and Asus. Might want to look into a 9600XT if you are looking to go 9600 series.

XT is better than PRO? or just cheaper? Thanks for the confirmation on 128 over 256.

9600XT is better and more expensive. :D

You should get a 9800pro by the time you get to 9600XT money.

I have recently purchased two of these 9600pro and was quite happy with them.

At the moment this 9600XT is only a little bit more on sale and it's quite a bit faster.

Ignore ForceCalibur. He is pretty much always wrong.

Only the 9600SE is crap. :D

LMAO!!!!! He is one of the original 9800p robots (easy to spot, they just surf the AT forums and spit out 9800pro everywhere for any video card question). For right around $100....the 9600 series might be the best bang for the buck right now. ForceCal thinks everyone has $200 to spend on a 9800pro.

buy a 9500 pro before a 9600pro, it's faster...of course, you have to get it used.

Exactly what I usually say to this question. The 9500 Pro, 2 1/2 years after launch is STILL a great card and faster than the 9600 series 95% of the time.

EXCUSE ME. Please link to ONE post where I have recommended the 9800 PRO over everything else. The only card I own support is the Radeon 9700 series. They are the BEST Price/Performance cards in the market, while delivering nearly 9800 PRO/5900 performance. I bought a Radeon 9700 NP for 90 DOllars, a Pro for 120. Unless you can get a 9600 series for 1/2 of that, your paying more than the 9700 for HALF THE PERFORMANCE.

Do your F*Cken reserach before you accuse people of sh*t. ANd buyers, go look at some Benchmarks before regretting buying ANY 9600s. If the 9600s were priced about 60-80 dollars, then they are GREAT cards. As they stand, they SUCK, and they SUCk for the price you pay.

Edit: The ONLY time I ever advocating getting a 9800 PRo is when the buyer is adamamant about getting a new retail/oem card. I recommend it over any 5900 series. Exceptions are made when price is factored in, obviously if you can get a 5900 series for alot less the 9800, thats the better deal.

You should stay away from all 9600 series, they are pure crap with crape on top.

This statement is totally wrong, no matter how many times you repeat it. And repeat it you have. :frown:

I think your best bet would be to hit the FSFT forums and get a used 9500 pro or a 9700. Might not have a warranty, but most people here are good traders so it shouldn't be a problem.

but it isn't junk...just overpriced.

Besides, the Toyota will probably be more reliable than the Mercedes anyway :p
