Hi im new to the boards=)
I just bought a 9600 Pro card yesterday to replace the mx420 that came with my new dell comp. I play cs and with all the default skins and models i get a max of 59 fps. Im thinking that i should be getting more and dont know if its my settings or if im just wrong, any help would be great, thanks.
Basic Specs:
2.26 ghz pent 4
512 ram
9600 pro with latest drivers
..if you need anything else ask

Try catalyst 3.6 and look if Vsync is on and your refresh rate set to 60Hz. If so, put it to 75Hz or more and just disable Vsync to see the real performance.

Also try "fps_max 100" without the speechmarks, the 100 figure will give you 100fps but you can have any number like 85 etc for FPS speed, just type it in console in CS (key above the tab key).

Btw DC2Ace,welcome to the forums.

Also look in ATI control panel and under displays tab and you can set the refresh rate for gaming(both OpenGL and D3D)like use the "same as desktop" option for refresh rate or select a number like 85Hz.

Btw I forgot to say when you select the display tab in ATI control panel click on the monitor pic in there and a new box will open with options for refresh settings, also might as well check your monitor tab one in ATI control panel and make sure it`s not set at 60HZ (unless you have a LCD) as well.

ok well i have the fps_max on 100 right now and im getting cat 3.6 (even though im pretty sure thats what i have) also, i have a 17 inch flat screen that comes up as plug and play under properties, do i need to get special drivers for it? btw im not using opengl or direct3d because both dont really work or act funny when im using them in cs, i have it set at software: 580/460 which is very low and i still only get 59 max=(
ill try out 75 hz instead of 60 and look up vsync now... thanks for the help

When you say flat screen you mean TFT(LCD) right? Don`t go over your recommended setting for your LCD you`ll damage your LCD monitor.

I find OpenGL works fine with CATs 3.6,in the OpenGL tab make sure trueform is off and put the two sliders above it(mipmap and texture ones) to the right (highest setting) I found that was the best setting for me(real smooth in gaming).

If you didn`t do a clean install (to remove the old Nvidia drivers),I would recommend you use driver Cleaner 1.9 from here .

yep his refresh rate is set to 60 so hes getting 59 steady locked! Lower your RES if you cant up your refreshrate.

yes, it is a tft monitor and im leaving refresh at 60 hz as recomended, i used driver cleaner and reinstalled cat 3.6, also changed settings for openGL, trying to figure out how to turn off vsync now, thanks again

It`s in your Opengl and D3D tab in ATI control panel, it`s the 1st notch on left for "off" .

changed the vsync, im just wondering though, when using openGL are the textures supposed to look very blury compared to the pixel look with the "software" setting in CS? it may be that way on purpose and im just not used to it.

DC2Ace,try playing with your Ansiotropic filtering setting in OpenGL tab ,I prefer 16x performance setting.

did you completely uninstall the nvidia card's drivers before installing your 9600pro???

problems with OpenGL or DirectX with CS is not right!

OpenGL should have the best quality out of the three (OpenGL, DirectX, software)

ive messed with the settings and i think i have it working now, using openGL my framerate is a steady 99=)
and yes, i used driver cleaner yet direct3d plays horrible on my computer compared to the others...dunno whats wrong

OGL rendering may be considered "blurry" in comparison to software rendering, but I suspect that's mainly a limitation of the textures--CS is an older game and, as such, doesn't use extremely high-resolution textures. You can enable anisotropic filtering via the drivers to compensate.
