9600 pro vs AIW 9600 pro

as far as games are concerned, did the 9600 pro lose any power when it got its AIW status? i ask this because i remember the 8500 and 9700 pros were both slightly faster than their AIW siblings.

The AIW 8500 was clocked slightly lower, but I thought the AIW 9700 Pro had the same clocks as the standard 9700 Pro. Maybe you're thinking of the AIW 9700np?

At any rate, the AIW 9600 Pro should be just barely faster than the standard 9600 Pro. Core clocks are the same, but the AIW's memory is 50MHz faster.

The AIW 9600Pro has 50mhz faster memory than the 9600pro. Also, It's one of the most complete AIW sets I've every owned. The FM radio is a real plus, and the free Remote Wonder II upgrade is a great deal. The RW2 is totally easier to press and use than the original.

BTW, why are u debating over the 2 cards? If you are a multimedia person that requires VIVO, TV/DVD recording and playback the AIW is a no brainer.
If you just game and are not interested in multimedia, then get the 9600pro. I bought the AIW 9600pro because i wanted to connect my XBOX to my computer and watch TV while I'm writting documents in Microsoft word (Thru-View).

Ultimately your decision should be based on your neccessities. Judge by your WANTS and NEEDS.

**My point is, you shouldn't buy something just cuz people say its better, but you don't have any use for the features.

EDIT:

The lack of DVI was no problem for me because my monitor had a seperate D-SUB wire, and the quality difference was barely noticable.

well i want all the multimedia features of the AIW, but its not primary concern. primary concern is probably gaming (with this type of card). since 9600 pro seems to already be on the lower end of future DX9 gaming, i didnt want to get a neutered 9600 pro in the AIW.

with that concern gone, my next concern is one of imagine quality. i have a DVI LCD panel which i will be using this card with. i must decide what is worth more to me... DVI image or AIW features. its a tough choice and a choice i shouldnt have to make in this age of video cards, especially considering the 9600 pro does DVI fine 🙁

ZippyDan,

Your DVI cocerns are the same as I have for the 9600AIW. It is odd that LCD's are moving towards DVI for much more accurate and faster signal transfer than VGA connections, yet ATI feels that this would not be a selling point for this new card. The 9600AIW is supposed the best of them all as far as all the other features, to bad ATI dropped the ball on the DVI connection.

Bet several engineers had sleepless nights over this. Anyway, to fit everything, and not use up 2 slots, it was a well worth sacrifice for me at least.

im sure they could have fit it. note the video out connector on the 9600 AIW is nonstandard. apparently it outputs a analog signal which u can use to output to several analog sources with the supplied dongle. at this point its too late - theres no point converting an analog signal to digital. but if that nonstandard connector outputted digital... and the dongle could convert to analog if thats what i wanted, then this card would be perfect

The AIW 9600 Pro includes a voucher for Half-Life2. If you have any desire to get that game, then I think the AIW is a much better deal even if you don't NEED the AIW features; it's nice to have them anyway.

Read the Anandtech review, they mentioned something about that, and how it couldn't be done or something... I forgot
