9600 or 9800 for HL2?

I've been putting together a fairly avergage PC on newegg for about 2 hours now. (mobile 2600+)
I've been going back and forth on different components, but I don't want to go too cheap on the video card. I have an all-in-wonder 7500 and I really like watching TV on the computer. Is the 9600 ok, or should I pay the $100 more for the 9800 pro? Will I see much difference in HL2? I'm a casual gamer since I got married.... shutup, it'll happen to you too if it hasn't already.

Well both cards will play hl2, it all comes down to what settings are enbled and what resolution. I am sure at like 1024 x 768 will play on both cards no problem. So its up to youo. With the 9800pro you will just have more eye candy so its where you think its improtnat. If you know you want to play more games int the future and dont want ot get a new video card for more demanding games then get teh 9800pro. Like the 9800pro will last you a couple years with no problmes, you just cant have all the eye candy on.

Its all where you want to spend your money, both cards will play them np.

i think the 9800pro would give u a lot more to play with in terms of eye candy and those other goodies. ign.com has a hl2 review in which they play the game with a 9800p at 1280x1024 i believe without a hitch. So if u want to play at that (or possibly higher) get the 9800pro.

Go for the 9800 Pro. It's got double the pipelines and double the memory bandwidth of the 9600 Pro. Translation, it's a significantly fater card- if you're GPU limited it's about a 75% difference. And the Mobile 2600+ will be adequate to feed the 9800 Pro with data, especially if overclocked.

9800 pro 4 the longer term, and considerably more pleasurable gaming xperience (sounds like a condom ad 🙂 )

Hell, I have a 9800pro and am kicking myself for not getting the 6800GT when I had the chance.

In the end it all depends on what resolution you play at. 9800pro can do Doom @ the highest settings @ 1024x768 if that is all you need.

I need 1600x1200, so that is why I am bitching🙁
