actually a very clever idea. sounds perfect for a weekend getaway ... for two. don't think it'd work well with kids!

that's pretty small...but it's actually not that bad :p. the single dorms in davis are TINY (82sqft.) but it's only a bedroom. this is 96sqft. with a "bedroom" (attic), kitchen, and living room. i didn't see a bathroom though...

so is this 96sqft living space or is the bottom floor 96sqft?

wow thats small.

i honestly think that i probably could be fine living in a 200 sq foot place. a friend of mine had a studio in SF that was about 220 sq feet and though cramped it was livable (and my friend is 6'5" so it was extra cramped for him)

Isn't he right, though? Over the past 47 years, population has risen as follows:
Africa - 227% (approx)
India - 148%
China - 105% (even with their 1 child rule)
Canada - 82% (a lot of which is distorted from immigration)
USA - 67%

If you want to acknowledge there are problems in the world, then acknowledge all aspects and not just the degrees of consumption. Everyone must be responsible.

Entitlement: "I should have this just because. And you shouldn't".
Logic: "I can have this because I don't have 82 offspring. If you don't have that many, you can have this as well. Your choice."
Jealousy: "WTF why can't me and my 82 kids each have that?".
Popular culture: "You can, you can! Here's money! I'm evil and wrong. I will beat myself about the head to pay for my sins now while you spend my money not feeding your existing kids, but having more that will starve. Have fun!"

Uneccesarily high, by who's measure? Ours.
Quality of life, by who's measure? Ours.
By the measure of what the planet can support.

We're not. The average American has 2.2 kids. A small growth, but barely more than even. Considering the early death rate and the fact not everyone procreates, I'd say most of our growth comes from immigration, legal or not.

The world population has nearly doubled in the past few decades, and it hasn't been Americans to blame. The guilt complex needs to go. Try thinking for yourself.

bout the size of a dorm room
Dorm rooms don't have cooking quarters, etc. They're essentially bedrooms, whereas this has to have all the necessities. Further, dorm rooms are part of a bigger building, allowing for economics of scale on efficiency; less insulation per room, less heating/cooling cost, etc.

That would be a cozy little weekend getaway cabin but don't think I could live in it. Hell, my guest bathroom is bigger than that.

I was expecting something Japanese, space is really at a premium there. I read about a hotel in Japan that's basically just a wall with 3x3x7 foot cubes set into it. Each is a "room", which is really just a bed with a TV on a shelf in the corner.

Regardless, @ the caption... "Small houses challenge our notions of need as well as minimum-size standards". That's a definite quality of life issue, and the real reason we're draining our planet's resources isn't our standard of living as Americans, it's people in third-world nations having 10, 15, 25 kids.

Right, because its better for Americans to use 5 times as much as the average person needs, as opposed to 20 people actually getting half of what the average person needs.

Not that they should keep churning out babies faster than nintendo can make Wiis, but when you wonder why the world hates us...
The world hates us primarily because they don't have what we have.
If they could have what we have, they would gladly take it. Most of the world is hypocritical at best.

The world doesn't hate you. Nor they want what you have.

I saw on the news a while back about these micro houses in Germany. They're using them as dorm-ish quarters for college students. They were small, but boasted a very creative use of space. There was a toilet, shower, bed, dining area, etc.

I have a feeling that's why there's not a toilet in any of the pictures ;)

Besides, that looks like something out in the middle of nowhere, go use one of the trees in the background.

Edit: shoot, just saw the powerlines in the second pic. Portapotty?
