96-98 Maxima

Ive saved up a bit of money and Im looking into getting a used '96-98 Maxima. How much should I expect to pay? Any major body changes that took place? Anything else that I should know about the various types of Maximas... Thanks.

If I was buying now I'd buy an SE model. It offers a better suspension and more HP. I have a 93' Maxima GXE and it is an awesome car.
 
The front end of the 95-96 Maxima is slightly different than the bumper/grill of the 97-99. Taillights are slightly different as well.

Get the SE, thats about all the advice you need. 🙂
 
GXE is like the base model, SE is the more sport oriented model (stiffer suspension etc.) and the GLE is the luxury model basically. There are also other things, like certain years of SE had foglights and spoiler standard, alloy wheels etc. To get info on all difference, it would be easier to go to maxima.org and search through their board.
 
GXE = base model
SE = sporty model, with 17' alloys, fogs, spoliers
GLE = 15' alloys, no fogs, no spoiler, has leather, bose, climate control, etc..basically every option!

I'd suggest you go for the '97+ Max because the front end is safer in a collision, and it also just looks much better! You could Maximas for cheap right now since they are extremely underrated and have crappy resale value <good thing for you>. The '97+ Max's don't really have any problems with them. The '95s had a front oxygen sensor recall, that's about it.

Again, your best bet would be to goto Maxima.Org and read through their FAQs and post in their forums. It's a pretty active forum over there.
 
I have the 96 SE with all the GLE options. Leather, sunroof, Bose stereo (great), ABS, auto. Cost me $9500 at a dealer auction in January with 75K miles. People on Maxima.org are very helpful.
 
My dad has a well-used '96 Max GLE and it has been great all around since new - it now has ~100K miles. I recently bought a 2K1 Max SE that I really like as well.
