955+amd7970=what

Depends on the game, the resolution, detail level and whether you overclock and how far. On top of that, what 7000 series card would you get and does anyone even know how a 7000 series card performs?

Most games are GPU bound currently. A high end 7K series card will help push that to be more CPU bound. But if you clock that chip up, you should be able to run a single upper end 7K without any issues. It may not bee quite as fast as say a 4.5GHz sandybridge chip, but its not like it would be a waste of money IMHO.

I plan on getting a 7950 to go with my 4GHz 965BE.

Honestly, assuming a 7970 is equivalent to a 6990 in performance, and if these Swedish benchmarks of BF3 are to believed, the Phenom II is going to throttle the 7970 pretty badly.

Some guy at frys tried to bs me saying a 1090t would be a waste over a oced x4 955...look at those numbers the 1100t has quite the lead despite the lower clockspeed.

Clock the 1100t to the speed of the x4 980 and the difference will open up even more i bet:biggrin:

I don't see a 1090t on that chart

Recent dual GPU's run no worse than previous gen dual configs on Phenom II's, why would you expect anything different?

7970 isn't a dual gpu.. I know once the 6970 are cfed there's a problem with the 955. But since the 7970 is a remake i was wondering if it would be bring problems to my pII since its a new gpu

The Phenom II is a capable gaming CPU and can keep pace with Sandy Bridge in most gaming configurations at modest resolutions with a modest GPU.

That said, with the 7000 series it might start to look long in the tooth. It won't be an ideal match, but my guess for what it's worth is that it won't be too much of a bottleneck.

The thing is, basing buying decisions on the PR smoke and mirrors that AMD, intel, and nVidia spew out through their marketing departments is a bad idea IMO. We don't know what the Radeon 7000 is going to turn out to be, if anything. At the very least, it's still going to be a DX11 part and it's highly doubtful that it will have a GPGPU platform to go with it or any significant new features.

If you want a fast DX11 part that's energy efficient, my bet is that the 7000 cards will be nice, but if you want to game now, there are cards on the market for a good price if you look around.

Ask the question when the card is released. Then an answer can be given.

That said, it probably will Bottleneck it, How much, no one knows.

Nope. Not even close. The ipc difference is enormous. You're welcome to correct me if i'm wrong.
In games the Phenom II perfoms quite well. By that I mean it will keep pretty much any PC game out there pegged at 60fps aside from Starcraft 2, provided that you clock it to 3.5ghz or more.

Like he said.. I'll end up going Intel right before arma3 hits the shelves. But as of now I know the 6950 is the best bang for the buck etc. But with the 7000 coming out and less power draw its a no brainer just to wait and see the results plus the price drop in the 6000 series. As for CPU I won't upgrade to any six core because there's no difference that ive seen in any of the benchmarks.

What about 7870 + 965be stock? Currently i have a 6870, would i see performance gains at all if upgrading to a 7870? I'm playing at 1080p.

I assume a gulftown will have no problem though. right?

BF3 is definitely using more then 4 cores based on this chart. Future performance of PII X6 chips will be very game dependant for a bottleneck, as it's keeping up with the big boys here. X4 is looking left behind.
