Should I buy this, and get a new case for my old Shxtty compaq, instead of waiting? Read my sig...I'm not sure if it's worth it, and if I should wait a bit and upgrade the whole thing? argggh this sucks

wooohooooooooo

I just received mine (finally)... running the celeron 633 fc-pga with stock heatsink and fan on a MSI-6163 Pro with an ASUS S370-DL Slocket. Using 128MB PC100 Memory.

Running at 1.70 V at 32 degrees celcius.

You can't get any better than this... all for 80 bucks and my slocket. Highly recommended purchase.. seems like Onvia really had a good batch of Retail CPU's there.

Good Luck to everyone else!

maybe a dumb question...

do I adjsut the FSB/voltage on the slocket or on the MB itslef? or both?!

I assume that if I adjust on MB then I leave the jumpers on the slocket to "auto"?

Thanks!
Oh and I FINALLY got my MB in the mail today.

Homerboy:

I bought the same setup after reading this thread. For some reason if I set the FSB to 100 on the slotket the comp would boot up as 600 something so in my case I had to manually set the SW1 jumper for 100 mhz. I set the voltage on the slotket as well but I have to run some tests to see what it is actually running at because I suspect the bios is controlling everything

Ok... I just don't get it.
Installed everything, tossed the SW1 jumper on the MB to the 100Mhz setting and when I boot up it gives me 912Mhz in bios? Is this right?
I left ALL the jumpers on the Abit Slocket to the default "auto" settings.

Bios says CPU is locked at 5.5x muliplier.

What am I missing?

ICQ me if possible 6225630

Thanks!

run wcpuid or sisoft sandra and read what the rating is :)
older mobo's just cosmetically report it wrong.

intel cpu's (633) only run a 9.5x and will not run at anything else no matter what.

I am one of the unlucky ones that had to got to 1.85 to get my 633 to 950. I have a Golden Orb and overall it's a fine deal since I DID use the Onvia coupon. Not a bad $80 investment. I actually get a higher memory score with my 533/908 Celeron 2 so that's what I use. BTW, try www.compute aid for a nice case for the $$$$. I have now bought three from them. My other PC is used by daughter who is VERY happy with the extra speed over her old 366/550 setup. This processor really unlocked some capability of her Rage Fury MAXX. ;)

When my combo boots up it says 912 mhz as well. This is probably because we're all using an older bios that doesn't detect the speed correctly. I suggest updating the bios or you can boot windows and run cpuid to get the real info. The cpu should have a multiplier locked at 9.5x so what you are experiencing should only be a cosmetic error which doesn't affect performance at all.

my combo reads 912 also. i have a tekram dual board and i dont think it supports this high of a celeron (9.5x multiplier).

well now I have a NEW problem. ACtually 2...

I have a 45gig Western Digital HD as my second HD in this system. on boot up the bios on this MB will NOT see the WD HD. it just hangs and goes nowhere. Sticks on autodetect.
So I went to upgrade the bios and it sounds like the bios update should fix this problem:
BIOS Revision: BE+_2DA1
Changes: Correct some HDD detect fail. Change FSB 95Mhz AGP clock division 1 to 1.5 .

However when I go to do the damn bios update and awdflash.exe asks me to enter the "file name to program" I enter the new bios name, the floppy chugs a bit then just stops, but the floppy access light stays on... UGH

Problem #2 when I boot up at 912/950Mhz I get through bios post etc fine, but when it gets to the WinME it gives me a BSOD, You think voltage? Heat?

ANy help?

Wow, does it really have to load all the messages when you want to reply to a thread...

I'd doubt that the hdd would be a bios issue. Releasing a mb without support for standard ide hdds would be pretty insane. Check the connections and make sure the jumper settings (master, slave, etc) are correct before committing the potentially deadly act of flashing your bios. Make sure the red wire goes to pin 1, and that the first drive on the chain is master while the next one is slave. If that doesn't work, try writing a new floppy with the flash utility. Floppies aren't exactly known for their data integrity.

As far as the cpu goes, this may very well be a heat issue. Check out other reports of overclocking... they'll say "we got the cpu to post at 1050mhz, but only boot stabely at 900mhz" or something to that effect. The processor doesn't really do anything during boot up, so its first real work is loading windows. Try getting a better heatsink and fan to raise your bootable speed.

the HDD is for SURE connected properly
If I toss in a 425MB Conner HD in place of the 45 gig WD it boots up, and sees the HD fine.
In fact these are removable trays (no it isnt the tray either becauase the primary master (my C drive) is also in a tray and it sees and loads just fine.

If I take the 45gig WD in its tray and toss in my other system, that system sees it and boots fine.

THe bios update description itself says that it helps in an error recognizing some HDs

Has anyone flashed this bios yet?

This is become a dog deal for me :(

Anyone want a Soyo MB?

Hi Homerboy

Here is my suggestion for the flash update. I had this same problem.

I actually created a boot floppy by running: format a: /s

This will place the system files on your floppy.
As for those new bios files. Instead of running the awdflash.exe from your floppy, run it from your local disk (say your 425MB Conner IDE drive) just make sure to copy the awdflash.exe file to the Conner drive and the new bios file (xxxx.bin) to the hard drive also. Then run the command:

c:\awdflash.exe xxxx.bin

Tell me if it works!

Good luck.

well it doesnt hang anymore... now it tells me "the program file's part number does not match with your system" and "unknown flash type"

I downloaded the awdflashe.xe from soyo.com and grabbed the 6BE+ 2MB bios from soyo.com which what this MB is is it not?

GRrrrr....

I try every 6BE bios soyo has to offer.. same crap on every one.
According to the BIOS post on boot up, the MB currently has VBE2-AA1 bios installed.

I was wondering what you thought of the ASUS k7m slot A motherboard and what type of chip would be best for it. I was thinking of getting the Athlon 800. looking for the best deal, If you have any suggestions on a different chip that is overclockable that would work with this mobo please let me know Thanks.

I tried to get the motherboard from Overstock.Com and I got charged for it and got something from their trash can that doesn't resemble the soyo unit advertised. and the dealings with them has been a bummer. I got the celeron 633 from onvia.com though cool item just no board to overclock from:disgust:

did you set the voltage on you Quality slotket between 1.8 and 1.9 ? If not, you'll be lucky to get 950.

Lucky chips do 950 @ 1.65-1.75

most chips i've seen (633,566) require (1.8-1.9v)

Mine does the 950 at stock voltage... but I'm having a heat issue wi the retail fan so I gotta turn it down a notch until I get my globalwin on there.
