9500pro vs 9600pro HL2

I've searched but couldn't find anything. Would they be about the same as far as framerate and quality settings go? I'm going to upgrade after boot camp but I want to enjoy the HL2 now.

Computer:
AXP2500+@2.15GHz
Asus A7N8X-E DLX
512MB PC3200 Kingston HyperX ram
BBA RAdeon 9500pro
 
the should be around the same speed,, but the 9600pro is a better overclocker so that might boost some FPS when needed
 
I disagree, if you softmod 9500pro and oc it it could catch up to 9800pro speeds, as they have a good chance at unlocking those extra pipes, and I believe have the same memory and core as the 9700pro, which is pretty close to 9800pro in performance.
 
9500 Pros can't be soft modded into anything only 9500np's could. 9500 Pro's aready have 8 pipelines they are missing half the memory bus though 128bit vs 256 of a 9700 and with inline memory you won't be getting that.
 
No, the 9500 pro will not softmod. You cannot unlock its pipes because the card already uses the maximum ammount of pipes built into the GPU, which is 8. The 9500 pro would be a faster solution than the 9600 pro. The 9500 pro is like a stock 9700 with a 128bit memory bus width.

Cool so I can hold off for a couple months before I upgrade, right? The 9500pro should suffice. Is it possible to overclock a 9500pro?
 
You can overclock just about any video card...overclocking a 9500pro will be a piece of cake. Just make sure you take it easy and that the card doesn't get too warm in operation. The only thing I failed to overclock was an XGI Volari 3, because I couldn't find anything that would enable clock changes for it 😉
 
You can OC a 9500 Pro. I believe th early ones were locked in the BIOS though and needed to be flashed, if you don't want to do that you should be able to OC with Omega drivers.
 
A 9500P should be faster than a 9600P in a shader-heavy game like HL2 (10% less memory bandwidth, but full HyperZ bandwidth savings and 37% higher fillrate/shading power).

I'm sure I've seen a 9500P benchmarked against a 9600P in HL2--maybe Firingsquad in an older article (CS:S or HL2:VST)? Or maybe I'm thinking of Digit-Life's and XbitLabs' tests on the HL2 leak.... Ah, here we are: CS:S numbers. A 9500P is faster than both a 9600P and a 9600XT.

Destroy? The 9500 pro at MOST is maybe 10% faster. 9600 pros OC WAY better then 9500 pros. and the average oced 9600 pro will beat the average oc 9500 pro.

tell that to my 9500pro..that runs 360mhz all day long (even had 385 out of it), now that destroys a 9600pro

Not in HL2, as my link shows a 9500P decently faster than even a 9600XT. In general, a 9600XT is pretty even with the 9500P, but the latter will pull away with heavier shaders.
