9500 Pro vs. 9600 XT? Which is better?

Thanks for the info and opinions everyone. I decided on the 9600XT. I talked him down to $135 shipped. I doubt it's got the HL-2 coupon (I didn't ask, and he didn't mention it, so I'm assuming no), but it's still a HUGE improvement over my 64MB Radeon 7200 (DX 7, yay!). I took overclocking into consideration, as well as possible support for future features on the driver-side, and decided that if I overclock the XT, it'll probably beat out the 9500 as I've heard from both this thread and other places that it overclocks really nicely.

Referring to softmods, is it possible to enable 8 pipelines in a 9600XT?

And AFAIK, there is no HL-2 coupon 🙁

No, the 9600 XT only has 4 pipelines (where as the 9800 XT has 8.) Now, if you want to soft-mod a 9500 Pro into a 9700 Pro, you need to get a 9500 Pro with "L" shaped memory. I can't remember why this is, but if you get a card with "I" shaped memory, don't bother trying to soft-mod it, it won't work. Can anyone tell me why you need "L" shaped memory? I forgot. :Q

The "L" shaped pcb memory is 256Bit instead of 128bit. The 9500 pro never had the "L" afaik. There were some non-pro's that did. They had the 256bit memory interface. Some of them would softmod to have 8 full working pipelines which would = 9700 NP.

NO ,9500 Pros came with L shaped memory that was only the 9500np's.
ALL pro's come with I shaped memory and can not be modified other than enabling them to OC.

I have a Sapphire 9500 pro it rocks. I would reccommend it to anyone looking in that price range.
