939 x2 question

I have been > < this close to hitting the buy button on a x2 3800/4200 3 times this week but I keep thinking I should wait till after the 22nd because the am2 prices will push the 939 down. From your folks experience, what do you think will happen?

are 939 x2's still being produced is the first question that should be answered. AFAIK prices on newegg for the 3800 x2 939 allready went up a wee bit, classic supply/demand thingy if you ask me. 939 x2's seem to be in popular demand, as a last quick upgrade be4 purchasing a complete new rig. I've seen people saying price cuts won't affect 939 cpu's, and I've seen ppl say to expect those prices to go up. There seem to be plenty of opty's around though.

and, did you see the current prices, for both am 2 and 939, am 2 is DIRT ffing cheap. I don't have a solid answer for you, but 95 bucks, or 85, in 2 weeks or so, whats the big deal ? Better then to see stores run out of x2's alltogether ... In holland I can't get my hands on a 939 x2 3800, and have to buy a 4200 for 129 euro's ...

if u want x2 939, but not opteron, buy it now... these things are not going to drop much more in price, and supplies are going to get scarcer... there's not a direct link between 939 and am2... 939 is done... no new retail pc's are being built... there's just not the price pressure on 939...

Good luck finding a opty 170 class or higher.


Now i wouldnt spend more then 130 on that chip, so your best bet is to goto our FS/T forum and see if you can get a second hand.

If you do spend more then 130 for that chip i'll tell you why its a bad investment:

Becasue you can get cpu+Board combos at frys for 160 /w E6400's which will SPANK that AMD. DDR2 ram is dirt cheap right now, so an upgrade that way wouldnt be so bad. You can pick up 2 gigs for around 130 @ newegg.


So, honestly at this point, you should just hold off until auguest when the uber price drops happens, and pick up a C2D during all the madness. Whores like me will be in the Q6600 line trying to see if we can grab it b4 it goes OOS.

Anyone else besides me interested in that quadcore for 268!?!?!??

Good luck finding a opty 170 class or higher.


Now i wouldnt spend more then 130 on that chip, so your best bet is to goto our FS/T forum and see if you can get a second hand.

If you do spend more then 130 for that chip i'll tell you why its a bad investment:

Becasue you can get cpu+Board combos at frys for 160 /w E6400's which will SPANK that AMD. DDR2 ram is dirt cheap right now, so an upgrade that way wouldnt be so bad. You can pick up 2 gigs for around 130 @ newegg.

X2 3800+ 939 is still $95 from newegg, although every other socket 939 x2 is sold out atm.

i think the prices will jsut keep going up on 939 chips.

i mean a northwood 3.2 chip now.. is something lik e$120 on ebay. thats because supply is limited, and people still want to upgrade those old systems.

This way you can grab a nice board and C2D when august price drops then to the floor. And recycle the ram. 😀

Thing with computers for me is like this. I can afford to upgrade my processor. But I end up updating to the newest socket, and then I need ram. So i overblow my budget by double : (.

It is very hard seeing am2 so cheap.

yeah they are all loss leader type deals.



the am2 deals a tfrys are really nice. you could either go core 2 in the future and keep your ram, or if the frys board is half decent (such as the nvidia based ones) you could even use the am2 board with a barcelona or future am2+ cpu since its supposed ot be backwards compatible.

I hear you. AMD should have really made a socket AM2 board that takes DDR RAM. If I could keep my 2 GB DDR, I would have switched over to AM2. Instead, I'm switching over to Core 2 Duo, since you can get a few motherboards that take DDR.

with the price that ddr ram goes for now, you might just be better of selling it. 2gb of ddr2-667 is under $100 at the cheapest places online. 2gb of ddr400 cl3 is $130+ if you look around.

you could probably sell used 2gb ddr400 and get new ddr2-667. yes its a hassle, but it could be worth it.

And I will tell you why it MAY be a good investment

1) He may not have the OS CD's to do a reinstall
2) He may not have all his APPS CD's to do a reinstall
3) He may not have the time to do OS and APP Installs as is the case with many corporate upgrades

What does $130 buy him, 6 months maybe more of perfectly acceptable Dual Core performance, and a significant productivity improvement over those 6 months.

Then if he chooses he can build a rig with a Vista OS that is more stable after the numerous patches that will come out in those 6 months and go with a 1333mhz FSB processor when they become mainstream.

I went for the x2 3800. Ewiz.com has a x2 4200 939 ($129ish) and Tigerdirect has a x2 4400 939 ($179ish). Both very tempting.

I thought about going am2 but I just didn't feel like messing with exchanging everything out. I am disabled and this kinda stuff is harder for me. It's my quarterly "clean the pc" event so i figured it would be a good time to do any upgrades. I do have all my install cd's etc.

I've never overclocked before but I am going to give it a try with this proc. I'll be happy if I get it to around 2.2ghz or maybe 2.4. I still can't decipher the how to post at the top of the forum. I understand the concept but I can't seem to translate that into what to do in my bios. (MSI nForce4)

I did try the nTune 5 program and told it to just tune my cpu and it was interesting seeing what it changed.

Yeah, doing a major system upgrade can be a big hassle. Usually those Fry's loss leaders use mobos that can be quite sketchy. I popped in a 4800+ when I got a chance and immediately saw a difference, all without having any problems whatsoever.

I think you made the right decision.

Your mobo should be very good for OCing. Be patient, all the tools are there. That chip should OC to 2.4 easy.
