939 Socket

I am planning to build my own computer with the help of my friend. I was hoping to get the DFI lanparty UT with the AMD athlon 64 3200+ and OC it. Now I see on the net that AMD has released the 3200+ with 939 socket. Just wondering what the particular advantages are of going for a 939 instead of the 754 I had set my mind on. Thanx for any help.

1)Dual channel memory (not a HUGE deal...but still helps a little)

One thing to consider is the 939 chips are usually clocked 200 mhz lower at the same PR rating. For example, the 3200+ 90nm (939) will be clocked at 2 ghz. The 3200+ (754) Newcastle is clocked at 2.2 ghz. From what I've seen the extra clock speed is more important than the dual channel mem; however, the 90 nm 939's could be great overclockers and the stock clock speed might not matter.

Thanx, any particular recomendations on the motherboard? Wait for the DFI board with the nVidia chip? I read the reviews on the MSI neo platinum..has a lot of problems?

I've read mixed reviews on the MSI mobo, but most problems are fixed with a bios update. Abit AV8 is good too, but if you don't have to get it ASAP, I would wait for DFI.

I use Asus' A8V Board, It's even an older revision but I have had zero problems with it.

theres about a $50 difference between the 939 and 754 3200s on monarch. is the s939 worth it?

If you want a platform thats upgradable over the next year or so then yes.

Thanx... But how overclockable are the new 939s. Havent seen any reviews on them.

90 nm 3200+'s perform about 5% faster.

How about the 754s. Is there a problem with heat when the 939s are overclocked?

early 90 nm 939's , some have hit near 3 Ghz, some only 2.5Ghz, let yeilds improve and say in 12 months we will see 3-3.2Ghz A64's, just takes time for a new process to mature, everyone thought the limits on 130 nm was 2.2Ghz, and look the fx 55 will be 2.6Ghz and it can reach 3.5ghz with extreme cooling.
