939 Opterons until H2 2008 apparently

So, by mid 2007 AMD is planning on increasing their 0.065micron product share to its maximum. According to our Japanese colleagues, by Q3 2007 all AMD processors will be manufactured with 0.065micron technological process. This will be the company?s fastest transition to a new production process within the last 5 years: it will take only 4 quarters. The company will continue shipping Socket754 processors until the end of 2007, Opteron processors for Socket 939 will continue shipping until H2 2008 and they will be based on 0.09micron cores.

Could be nice news for socket 939 users.

Its with regards to Opterons though, it?s a different target audience, although we as enthusiasts still purchase them. s939 won?t last long for the consumer end user. IIRC AMD will stop production of ?Athlon 64? s939 processors by the end of the year.

Though 'Opteron' is not by nature a consumer part, Socket939 is, so socket 939 Opterons are still, by and large, for the mainstream.

What's annoying is they say they will be 90nm right through to Q1 2008, while AM2 will be getting 65nm (and probably better overclocking) parts sometime in 2007.

If that is true this is good news. I bought a 146 Opteron a few months ago, cause I knew a large amount of software wasn't dual core yet. but I do plan on buying a 170 Opteron eventually. This will give me alittle longer to wait and a few prices drops later.

if I was AMD I wouldn't put the money into creating a 65nm CPU for a technically outdated socket. I think its smart to put the new 65nm chips with the new socket, and not waste money messing with the dying breed s939.
