'93 Taurus: what does "max AC" do?

I drive a '93 Taurus GL wagon. I've noticed it seems that the only difference between "norm AC" and "max AC" is that "max AC" makes the fan blow harder. it doesn't seem to actually make the air any cooler

It makes sense that it would only make the fan blow harder(which would probably actually warm the air slightly), as an A/C compressor is either on, or off.. I don't think there is a way to adjust the temperature of the airflow without using some mechanism to cycle the a/c.

I'm not sure that the air is actually cooler but it cools the cabin down faster because it is cooling pre-chilled air instead of cooling the warm outside air.

hm cool! so that means that I don't have to worry about putting even more load on the engine with max AC

At any rate, I am cooler when running max ac.

want a cookie?

This is the worst use of "want a cookie" I have ever seen. It doesn't fit at all. Shame on you.

I always use the Max AC (or Recirc) setting...esp. when behind some vehicle with a smelly exhaust or burning oil or something.

Now here is where one could properly use the phrase "do you want a cookie?" Not that I am, but it would make sense in this case.

I'm on my second ford truck, and it also uses the AC and MAX AC settings. MAX AC simply recirculates the air in the cab, while AC pulls in outside air. Does the same thing as the little button w/ the circular arrows on Volvos\Acuras.

I overthrew the old cookie jar rulers. I now regulate all tossing and giving out of cookies.

The fan doesn't blow harder, the extra noise is from the air intakes inside the cabin.

You would think people here would be able to feel a simple increase in airflow. :p

the fan will blow "harder" because there is no pressure it has to work against, since it's taking out what it's putting in. try rolling down your window, you'll get the same effect (but without the extra fan noise caused by the intake). there's no difference in fan speed. it will blow "colder" because it's taking air it has already cooled and cooling it again.

japanese cars can do the same thing with any heat/vent output/AC combination. those pitiful Ford HVAC controls never seem give you all the options. ;)

edit: "MAX" A/C actually puts less strain on the engine and improves gas mileage because the A/C doesn't need to be cycled on as much to cool the cabin. Honda mentions this in their manuals.
