Well it locked up while I was sleeping. It was at 41 hours stable when I went to sleep. It did boot right back in to windows with no problem, but obviously not entirely stable. I doubt its the power supply, since it was having problems on another motherboard with another power supply as well..

Yeah, good thing my X2 is reliable. I'm gonna replace the 920 with a Yonah once the desktop boards become available.

Locked up again just sitting idle. Just gonna leave the second core disabled until I replace this POS with a Yonah.

??!!

if you tested it with 42 prime stable, it shouldn't even lock up during idle...did you seriously mess something up with prime95? I mean a lot people run their systems that's only a couple hours stable in prime95 since they claim to not need the stability as long as their games/applications don't crash

prome95 was still running when I went to sleep, wanted to see if it was 48 hours stable..when I woke up it was locked up, rebooted it, went back in to windows. Walked away for a few minutes, came back in, and it was locked up again. Restarted, disabled the second core..and no problems.

920 part 2, coming soon..

on a side note, when did newegg start giving free games with CPU's?
Getting the full version of F.E.A.R. and a $35 headset free with my 920. Last time I got a 2 week trial of WoW.

Looking forward to it.... :) Did you pick-up another mobo? Yeah, the 2 week trial of WoW is still on my desk unopened.

I did a little research, and decided to try a Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI. It's a NF4 sli chipset, but cost $110, and from what I've been seeing, it hits anywhere from around 275-310mhz FSB, so it might just be possible to hit 4-4.2ghz with an inexpensive motherboard, and take the OC price/performance crown away from the X2 3800+.

EDIT: OH, and I'm not gonna take a soldering iron to this 920

Glad to see your still at it. Let us know how that gigabyte sli board does, I might have been able to save myself 120 bucks and had SLI, which I thought would be enabled by now on the 975 boards.

Well, so much for being able to get a decent overclock with the 920 on the NF4 SLI chipset..same problem as several other boards, won't boot past ~222mhz FSB...but it's not the motherboard itself either, because I stuck my single core P4 ES on there..and it booted right up at 240mhz FSB..stuck the presler on the P5P800SE..and it's running at 245mhz FSB...very very strange...

stevty2889,

I'm thinking of getting an ASUS P5P800SE and a PD 805 as a budget solution allowing me to recycle an ATI AGP card and 1 gig of OCZ PC4000. (I might spring for the D820).

My question is are there any major downsides to the P5P800SE?

I would like to overclock the CPU and I'd like to know what options there are in the BIOS... seeing as you have one. The ASUS web site is rather vague on the subject and there aren't any reviews of the board that I've found.

Cheers!

I would get the 805 over the 820 simply because it costs less, and it's actualy easier to OC the 805. The P5P800-SE has decent OC features, FSB in 1mhz increments, good vcore options. With decent air cooling should be able to get an 805 to at least 3.6ghz on that board.

You da man dude (for the quick reply).

One more question....

I currently run a P4C 2.4@3.2 267fsb / 2gig Mushkin XP PC4000. (the new buget 'puter is for the wife and kids) The 2.4C is an 800MHz bus chip so I'm used to starting my OC at 200 and taking up from there.

As I understand it the D805 is a 533 bus chip so my fsb options will start at what.....166?
Then I'd incrementaly raise the FSB to find my OC, right?

Boy, maybe I should trade out my PC4000 ram for low latency PC3200. What do you think?

It will start out at 133mhz FSB. It's got a 20x multiplier, so for every 1mhz you increase the FSB, the CPU will increase by 20mhz. At those lower FSB speeds, your PC4000 ram can probably run with latency's as low as good PC3200 ram.

stevty2889,

You have several systems including a P4 3.2ES.

If I got my 805 to say 3.6GHz on the P5P800. In YOUR opinion, how would it's performance compare considering it's using AGP and the smaller bandwidth of DDR1.

Would it be as fast as my 2.4c@3.2-267/270fsb in an Abit AI7 (that performs close to a stock 3.4C)?
Slower? Equivilent? I ask just because I have no experience with dual-core Pentiums. My Hyper threaded 2.4 is a virtual dual-core. The 805 is dual but no HT. Just trying to guage what to expect before I drop the cash.

Thanks again!

805 @3.6 will be faster than your 2.4c @3.2 in basicly pretty much everything. In SMP aware applications, you'll get an aditional 60% performance increase over a single core with HT. DDR1 will still offer plenty of bandwidth since it's using a lower FSB, and I don't think even a 7800GS will be limited at all by an 8x AGP slot. The only limit of the AGP slot is that you won't be able to get some of the newest high end cards.

Thats awesome.

My system has an ATI X850XTPE. Maybe I'll build this 'budget' system and run it myself with my 2 Gig of ram, give the kids/wife my current machine and they can migrate their 9800XT ( on an old P4 1.6@2.0 right now) and use that.

My intention is to not spend a lot right now since I'll be wanting a Conroe (and that means complete upgrade) in the future if the chips live up to the advance press. I figure to build that system early next year.

Thanks!
